Another hardware post…….Starting over on pulls - what should I do

Ok - I was ready to order my pulls 2 days ago - but just couldn't do it. The ones I selected (Top Knobs Ascendra) just felt too chunky. I like the look when there is one - but when I saw them installed in a real kitchen - the overall look was too heavy. Now I am back to square one - and have to order by Monday or else they won't come in time for the cabinet people to install.

I have overanalyzed this entire thing - so can you help me narrow it down or suggest something that might work? I am going for a modern traditional look. I even considered a cup pull (which I had sworn off) but that wasn't a big hit with the family. A few that I am considering are below - but I am not loving any of them…

And also, if you feel like you need more time to make the decision, you should really give yourself more time. The cabinet people or someone else can install them at a later date, even if they tell you they need to do it on a certain day.

We installed our own handles, and it took some time to get them perfectly placed, but it can be done with a template and patience. Once the holes are drilled, it is much harder to change your mind, unless you find a handle with the exact same dimensions.

Every time I've rushed to make a decision I ended up regretting it a bit, so I would make sure you are comfortable with your decision first.

I needed polished nickel, and just went with Top Knobs' Chareau collection shown here in their blog post. It is a transitional look that leans traditional. I ordered samples of all the hardware shown here, and went with those on the left. I especially like the hex knob. You can order samples @ $5 and they ship fast. They are also available at Overstock via Build.com. Or at Build.Com directly. Good luck.

mizlizzie - I have seen those and they are pretty. do you have a problem with the grooves (not sure what to call them) gunky?

Yes I was saying to consider 2 fixtures. I would want some nice bright light for working. I might consider seeded glass fixtures also. If you always will have the table there and with all the leaves in place, then you can bring down to a lower height than if you need to be able to walk under the fixtures. Something like this below. Although I would probably look for one that offers higher wattage with more than 1 bulb. Here is a link that might be useful: pottery barn fixture

I think your house is beautiful. No need to fill it up over night. A good design evolves over time. I like the brick tones in your fireplace and think the terracotta tones would be nice for the main color in the high ticket items such as the rug. Your original prints from Haverty's are pretty but too flat I think and you do not want to go for that 'furniture store' showroom look anyway. I do not think your clock is too large, it may look it with the close up shot, but from the viewpoint of the other rooms does it look too large to you? For larger candle sconces you might need to check antique stores and consignment shops. Check on Craigslist too, look for electrical that you can pull the wires from to change to candles. Sometimes they are listed as dining room sconces. Good luck with your project! You have a beautiful home.

Haha - nope, Elmer. Not jumping on an opportunity to be snarky, although you do certainly provide enough fodder for that . I am just suggesting that you'd have a better life than you seem to think you have here in the US. Yes, I've been to Australia. While beautiful and yes, they have so much to offer, I'm always grateful to come home. Although I'm not proud of the actions of an awful lot of people here in the US, I'm proud of my country. We've got fixes to make. But I'm in it for the long run. That seems to "challenge your own views". So be it. You got your panties in a wad about me some time ago (as you have with several others ..... you know who they are) and let's just agree to steer clear of each other. Y'want to start talking about silly insults? Perhaps just search on your own name ....

Here are some ideas in your space to perhaps help you aid you in selecting a style. Not knowing the width between the cabinets nor the ceiling height they are not to scale and I just tossed some up so you can see shapes, etc. based on the discussion I used this metal tone. way to high yes... it's an orb in a finer thin dark bronze metal

I looked up your original choice, and I'm not seeing how these others are any less chunky that the Ascendra. Do you think you might feel the same way about these when they are installed? Or maybe it was the squareness that you don't like? If that is the case, the first one is probably your best bet.

Personally I think the first one is the prettiest and a little different than the usual, so I would probably pick that one.

But my handles may be chunkier than your choices, so perhaps I am not the one to ask. :-) I love that they are solid. They add a lot of sparkle to my kitchen and they are very easy to grab.

The first one is the most expensive (of course) and it is the Atlas Shelley pull. I definitely agree that the 3rd one is just as chunky feeling - but since it was angled at the ends it felt visually lighter to me. I thought I would go with #1 at one point this morning - but I don't know if it is too "bathroomy". I would delay and just install myself - but I tried that a few years ago with an entertainment center and it was a disaster - doesn't matter how "easy" it is, my DH and I manage to botch any DIY type thing. :(

Without knowing what your cabinets look like, I really like #2 the most, and then #3.

busymom, I don't have them in yet, and they're for our master bath reno. But I have similarly reeded pulls in the kitchen -- far more ornate, actually -- and no trouble at all.

I love the simplicity of Steel Bar Pulls w Stainless Steel Finish but maybe too modern for what you're looking for? If not, I like #2.

I like the Kara pulls at Top Knobs, they come in all finishes and sizes. I have a similar pull in the matte black. Mine

Thank you everyone. I placed the order for the first one, but if when they are all here (and I can see more of them together) they don't work out I think I will go with the Revitalize as my second. Thank you!
