Which roses can take full unrelenting sun?
Comments (19)I'm with Moroseaz ! I live in Bullhead City Arizona, where the bumper stickers say "Bullhead City - wind chill factor: 105F" ! I use shade cloth for my "babies", as well as planting them in half-barrels (to be able to move them around); they currently "live" in light shade...temps are now 100 plus...dry, dry heat(single digit humidity)until late summer monsoon season:temps will still be around 100, but with NASTY humidity ! but very little actual rain drops ! When and if it DOES "rain", I run out to the street and play "connect the dots" and do a happy dance ! In winter (which lasts about 2-4 weeks, like Moroseaz said)they are moved to full sun areas... I have chosen to switch, not fight the climate ! It's taken me nearly twenty years to reach this stage, but I'm finally crying "uncle" ! Much less stressful in my old age ! My ammunition is now limited to shade cloths, light shade, lots of mulch, epsom salts, society garlic, water, water, water, and then MORE water ! oh yeah, and a wide brimmed straw hat (for me) ! One more thing, I water all my plants in early evening (still light out)which is much more comfortable for us all ! I don't worry about wet leaves, they're dry before I can turn off the water spigot ! Overnight lows around 70F (sweater weather like Moroseaz said !)...See MoreJM, is there one that can take full sun all day?
Comments (8)I'm not worried about the JM being subjected to the cold here. In my 6 years here in the Denver area, I can tell you that it's been below zero only a handful of times. And never has it been below -10. My biggest worries are the intense sunshine (300 days of sunshine here is not uncommon), the late winter to early spring snow storms that dump lots of wet, heavy snow and the freezing that come right after 3 days of 70deg. temps (it's snowed here just two weeks ago), the hard, clay soils that hold moisture, and the occasional winter winds that can be strong at times with some winter storms. Some of those problems can be alleviated somewhat. I can dig down a few feet and amend the soil. I do have a fenced back yard, and living in the suburbs the neighboring homes are close, so that can protect from the wind somewhat. And I can always build a windshield to put up in the winter. However, I cannot protect against the sunshine. The only way to do that would be to build a shelter of some kind that could filter the sun, however that is against my community architectural guidelines, so that won't be happening. If I could guarantee that the JM wont die because of exposure to the sun, then I will have no problem planting one. But so far I haven't been able to determine if the sunshine would be too much, or just cause leaf scorch in the late summer....See MoreWill red pentas take full sun?
Comments (15)They are indeed supposed to love full sun, but this can depend on the strength of the sun in your region. For me in South Florida, my red graffiti Pentas have let me know that they don't like a full day of full sun without lots of water. The times i left them out for a full day, they'd be shriveled and wilting by the end of the day. Basically, i have to water them more when i leave them out like that. To make things easier for me, i moved them to a slightly shadier area and they do better. No wilting and they still bloom. I'd suggest executing your plan first. The conditions where you are might be just fine. If you see things not going so well, then just switch up....See MoreLow shrub for all-day hot sun, drought tolerant
Comments (8)Ornamental pomegranate, it blends right in to a Mediterranean landscape. It can be like a tiny bush-like tree. If you're in climate zone 10, dwarf natal plum is pretty drought tolerant, the little white flowers are pleasant smelling at night (better smelling than jasmine, in my opinion) but it has a lot of spikes. The little red fruits (when fully ripe) can also be made into preserves....See MoreUser
