75.8% finished kitchen - suggestions for paint and B/S please?
Comments (47)Hi all, Thanks for your honest feedback on the pictures I posted. I just don't know what to do. The taupe tiles on the board do come in the 2.5 x 5 size, but they may be too dark for my kitchen. Marble mini-brick subway tiles (similar to Alku's) look to white/cool for the granite. I will also continue to hunt for a soft gray field tile to see if that would work. I can see what you mean about some of the accent tiles looking blue. I am thinking that instead of multicolor accent tiles I posted, I might go with a single color (a grayish glass tile like the ones on the sample board. By the way, those glass tiles on the board are about $130/ft - rather ridiculous, if you ask me). Charlikin, no decision yet on the paint. I am leaning towards BM's Wedgewood Gray, which is slightly darker than what I currently have in the dining area. Goodness, I just realized that that paint color is more grayish blue and not green at all! Good luck with your search! OK, it looks like I am back to square one for paint colors! By the way, DH is actually color-blind, so he is no help at all! I will continue my search and will let you know what I find! Thanks again!...See MoreWhite Beveled Arabesque In Our Kitchen? Comments (52)OK, no pictures yet, but here is where we are at: 1) Installed beadboard (the wood stuff that comes in 6" (or so) tongue and groove strips. 2) It was a pain for our contractor to get it all laid in tight with no seams etc. Cost us more than I had hoped, but still worth it. 3) Painted with oil base primer 4) One coat of oil based topcoat in the same color as our cabinets. It looks very good - we think the verticals in the beadboard go nicely with the vertically fluted columns (which I didn't think would work so well at all). We had bought some Utilitech LED under cabinet lights from Lowes and we returned these as they were 1) not dimmable and 2) Kinda ugly. We are looking to purchase a different set of "softer light" dimmable LED lights so we will only have "landing strip" illumined countertops when DW really wants everything "lit up". Our hope is that with dimmable "soft white" under cabinet LEDs the white beadboard will give us what we want (not too bright, and predictable) until we have time to replace the Staron countertops with some sexy granite or soapstone and a different backsplash. I promise to post pics after the final coat of oil piant and after UC LEDs are in place! At this point we really think the beadboard looks nicer than we had hoped esp. for an interim solution....See MoreSeeking votes/opinions - Uppers on BS Window and Sink Wall
Comments (83)@ sena01 - Thanks for the personal experience with this kind of thing. It always helps hearing from people who have been there. And for your vote! @island - Aunt lives between Naples and Ft. Myers. I haven't been down there yet, but it sounds beautiful. The pics are great. They have a floorplan I would love, with the whole house centered around the back in a big U. That would so not work in Alaska, given you need every inch of sun here you can get. But, I just love that kind of floorplan. Now that I understand what you are liking, I can mock some things up. I do want to make the point, though, that those 18" cabinets are slightly over 1/2 the size of the 30" uppers. Isn't that what you said you preferred? @mpagmom - Well, I gotta say, that's a pretty cool sink. I don't know how hard it would be to find a sink like that or how much it would cost. Also, not sure if it really works with what I am doing here? I can sure look into it, though. I assume you are talking about the greenish kitchen when you say dark gray? That is a nice kitchen. You know, Marcolo used those exact words on me - "think slate". I'm just not really finding one I like - except the one on the back of that peninsula in the pic I posted again above. And, my neighbor friend directly across the street has a slate BS and I don't really want to do the same thing... Good question, Deedles. I know we don't have any current problems with that, but the cabinets are raised up. I want whatever is in the punch bowl, though. Monday morning or not. My partner mocked up what it might feel like at the sink last night by clamping up a board. I'm not having any problems with it, being short. He wasn't loving it. We are going to leave it up for a while and see how it feels over time....See MorePantry door handle opinions please
Comments (14)Localeater--thanks! It's nice to be back. Feels comfortable. As far as the door, the hinges are standard so the door only opens out. It's just that it has a ball catch for a latch instead of the usual door knob latch configuration. I do like your idea if the door was a swinging one. Bookworm--the pendants were discontinued almost two years ago. Unfortunately, one had some flaws in the cord and the glass that I didn't notice when they first arrived. At install I saw the damage and tried to get a replacement, only to find out I couldn't. I installed them anyway as the damage wasn't too bad. In the first couple of weeks, the shade on the damaged one began to crack. It's noticeable if you look, and I'm afraid that one day the glass will come crashing apart. So they will ultimately need to be replaced. I'm ticked because I love the perfect, curvy bell shape so much. FFH and Mpagmom--Now I remember that I had considered that option also. I'm not sure why I didn't pursue that more. A2--Hope your ankle has healed. I appreciate you weighing in as someone whose been in the kitchen has a better sense of the space. And thanks to everyone else for the Aubrey votes. You convinced me. DH jumped at the chance to grab his drill last night (and he doesn't jump at much once he's settled down on the couch at 9pm) when I gave him the green light. I like it. Not sure I'm head over heels, but it's done. Thank you all! It's nice to get input from other TKOs....See More- 7 years ago
