Frameless shower enclosure installed prior to tile wall being grouted

We are building a new home and our frameless glass shower enclosure was installed today. The tile walls haven't been grouted yet. Of course logic is telling me this is not right. I'm afraid that in time water might find it's way behind the tile somehow. I've never seen it done this way. Is it unreasonable to demand from the builder that the glass be taken down and re-installed after the tile has been grouted?

Comments (29)You have valid concerns and we take extra measures to acommodate steam vapor escape by treating the ceiling and/or adjoining painted surfaces outside the shower with usually an oil based primer and sometimes topcoat of paint . Steam rooms require a few things to be just right and if so you shouldnt have excessive release of vapor. Starting with the proper sized generator for the "adjusted cubic ft" A proper glass install with the acceptable tolerances ( we use sweep and bulb gaskets to compensate for minor inaccuracies and zip our steam showers up and then utilize the transom.) A transom smartly placed in relation to the Fan that also needs to be the proper CFM for the room and other hvac concerns,. Our fans are always on a timer, and preferably jumped on the same circuit as the showers interior light. You want the fan on from the start of the shower and remaining on for 30 +/- mins after you get out. I always suggest opening the transom and swinging the shower door IN to the shower when done. On this steamer ceiling we used the existing bathroom fan and planned ahead and had the painter coat our cedar install with sikens marine grade topcoat. Kmcg, very true cost is a factor:) Our contractor hired a sub to install a frameless enclosure & one of the only things we requested in the design was that they cut around our marble chair rail that runs through bath & shower - well, apparently they didnt listen and upon install they not only cut our tile on the wall but they cut a notch in our marble tub surround that also juts into the shower. The notch was not something that was discussed when we discussed the design. Needless to say we are very unhappy with the installation. There are multiple other problems as well - door appears warped, leaking at clip, door leaks(no space for sweep left under door), mitered corner leaks, chip in top of door, VERY sloppy silicone....the list goes on. These are the things we have found & the installer admits there are more problems we havent noticed. Also admits to lack of communication before & during install. We are going to ask that they take down glass, have tile replaced as well as the marble notch be filled in & reinstall new enclosure with cuts around tile & marble. My faith in the company is not that great now but I think the right thing to do is allow them to try & fix it. UGH! To make matters worse our contractor isnt being very supportive - glass people long time family friends. Cant believe our complaints! Good thing we are almost finished & he will not get final payment until we are satisified. Comments (16)Reading here at GardenWeb, I know that tile and grout are not waterproof. Your guy is just not informed. Yes, we have bathrooms done "the old way" and sometimes the tile above the bathtub did stay for many years. But how many have rotten walls and floors behind them? Do yourself a favor and read up on how a shower should be built before you hire the next person, and talk about their methods and products before you hire. People are still out there, putting up materials worth thousands of dollars, not knowing what they are doing. After the leaks ruin other rooms in the house, all has to be torn out and redone. Comments (60)I recommend you/someone is on site in the morning. Take photos of where they are when they start the day and then someone drops by just before the end of their day - do the same thing. Take photos and then post photos....each day if you must. Start a new thread and tell us that you are posting new photos daily with morning/evening photos each time you post. We will keep an eye on how things are going and will point out a 'Stop! Don't let them go any further!' statement if we have to. You can take a photo of the demolition of this cr@p. Then start with new photos of the redo. If you see wall studs with nothing on them or in them...great. Take a pic. If you see studs with plastic stapled to it but nothing else....great. Take a pic. To you it may not look like much, but to us we will be able to spot the 'little' things that make BIG differences. You have a stand-up GC. S/he said it's a do over IMMEDIATELY. I know this is disheartening, but we have seen the worst option possible: we've seen GCs tell homeowners (as in, "Hey Lady, let thems guys does the jobs youse's paying 'em to") that nothing is wrong, or that they are too picky or that 'what do you expect'? Etc. And we've seen GS swear at anyone who questions them and drive off...with the homeowner's PRODUCTS in the back of their truck! Nope. Not kidding! They have ghosted homeowners to the point of $20K lost in payments and materials. I know. It doesn't make you feel much better (especially when it is someone else's misfortune) but you have a better than average situation. You have a GC who is taking this down and getting a new crew. That is MORE than many, many people have gotten. I know. One would hope a pro would offer more....but the building industry in N. America (for the most part) is the Wild Wild West. That idea of, "Big Government is Bad Government" is part and parcel for the situation we are all living through. Chin up...you are on the RIGHT TRACK. Trust us on this one. You are going to be OK...your GC is doing what s/he SHOULD be doing....See More
