Comments (41)Thank you again for the kind words! ratrem: The peninsula is approx. 4.5 ft wide x 5.8 ft long. We have rollout trays on the kitchen side where all of our everyday dishes, silverware, placemats , etc. are stored (we eat most of our meals on the peninsula) and fairly shallow storage on the dining room side (stuff we don't use that often like crockpot, apple corer, pump pots, etc. are stored in there). julcarr: The ceilings are the original height of what was once our formal living room and they are 12 ft. tall. I'm not one for a lot of "stuff" and it was really tough for me to put the glass cabinets in the top, but with the narrow, tall kitchen, we needed to have something to add an airiness to the space and to help break up the mass of white cabinetry. I had a very small collection of white pitchers already, so that's what I've decided to display in them. The kitchen has such a stream-lined look, I've enjoyed seeing the curviness of the pitchers...helps soften all the harsh edges I think and it gives me an excuse to go antiquing! The window is 88" wide x 78" tall. The two side windows open to the outside and really brings the outdoors in. jalsy6: I have been pleasantly surprised with the range. I would have loved to explore options of some more high-end appliances, but with this being a whole house remodel, I couldn't dump all of our money just into the kitchen. We didn't have room for wall ovens and have no gas available. That narrowed our options way down. I like the look of it, it has a shallow bottom oven, and so far my baked goods have come out far better than they did with my old oven. So, all in all, we give it two thumbs-up! michoumonster: Funny you ask about those particular light fixtures. The chandelier in the dining room was the original fixture to the house. We bought it from Pottery Barn over 15 years ago and I like it as much today as I did then. The light in the foyer is from Home Depot. It is from the Thomasville line. I remember it being very reasonably priced and I think seems to be of pretty good quality. colorfast: The table is from Pottery Barn (Toscana). I had my eye on it from the beginning of the remodel and actually planned the space to make sure it would fit. It has two leaves that go on each end. At Thanksgiving, we were able to formally seat 16 people. I like the bench seating and especially in our space. It allows people to sit with their backs to the dining room wall and visit amongst everyone in the living room and kitchen. It also eliminates random chairs being pulled out into the walkway between the couch and dining area keeping the area tidy and uncluttered. I swore off fussiness with this remodel...no more straightening chairs, towels (only hooks for us now), and various other things that just drove me crazy. You can still catch me fluffing pillows on a frequent basis although. As far as how comfortable they are, I suppose that depends how long you linger. We're middle aged, and our friends like the casualness of them. I think people feel more inclined to have a seat rather than pulling out a chair and spinning it around to visit with others in the space. When our parents come to dinner, I try putting them in the upholstered chairs just knowing they'll be more comfortable there. I think if I had more of a "formal" dining room area, chairs would probably be the way to go. For your question about emotional issues, yes, there were some moments of emotional angst, especially when packing up and deciding on what to purge. With the entire house doing a complete 180, hardly anything we had was going to work in the new space. But, like I said earlier, it is our love of this home and all the memories it holds that encouraged us through the project. I love it more now knowing that we didn't give up on it. I honestly think we'll never leave....See Moreis it crazy to use white bath towels?
Comments (48)Well, apparently you can go back...to RH to exchange towels. Used my brand new Marine Blue RH towels for 2 1/2 days when I noticed some spotting/lighter areas on my face/hand towel. I know they recommend avoiding the use of "personal care products containing Benzoyl Peroxide and Alpha Hydroxy Acids" but thought that my sister had used her RH towels for years without issues and had been using a face-wash containing AHA's. Also, I really thought RH was merely "covering it's a**" (as clothing and other manufactureres often do in/on their care instructions, and RH's list of no-no's for their towels does seem a bit excessive). I thought that as long as I rinsed my hands and face very well after using my Dr. prescribed products, the towels should hold up fine. Not the case, as evidenced by those splotches that appeared after a mere 2 1/2 days of use. RH was wonderful, let me exchange the towels for white ones without a hassle (I have never had a problem with white towels, maybe someday I'll try some other make of blue towels). They assured me at the store that I could use bleach with these despite the laundry list of care instructions (I always use bleach for whites, and prefer not having to do two separate loads for whites). FYI, they recommended washing their colored towels with vinegar prior to use to prevent fading/running (wish I'd known about that when we'd gotten their Espresso towels--bought them because they were the darkest brown ones we'd seen. Ours are fine, they're still dark and look terrific, but they might've remained like-new dark after an initial was with vinegar). Anyway, they said to wash the towels with 1 cup vinegar and cold water--NO detergent, and then follow with two wash cycles with cold water only, NO detergent (to remove any lingering vinegar odor). This is supposed to help the towels retain their color (they also said it would help with spotting, but would not prevent or completely prevent spotting from the AHA's and Benzoyl Peroxide). So, I am back to white towels, at least in the MB, which is the one I use. Maybe my hesitance to fully embrace the blue towels (which I'd wanted all along for the MB) was my subconscious telling me I'd have problems with them, and I was really meant to remain a white towel girl! LOL!!! (Since DH doesn't use any products containing AHA's/BP, I think we can keep more colorful towels in the hall bathroom without any problem--at least, I hope so!)...See Moreupdate: finally finished kitchen (white & soapstone)
Comments (36)Thanks, everyone! Let me try to respond to your questions and thoughts: @thedinos, my Miele is an H4044BM. It isn't hard to clean--the glass tray slides out easily and cleans nicely. BUT, the broiler heating element is hard to clean--it's been splattered with something, so when I use the broil, setting, I'm getting a smokey mess. I tried cleaning it, but didn't have much luck (I didn't try too hard!) and now I use my big oven to broil. @aek9y, I LOVE my griddle! I use it so often, I'm amazed! It's a workhorse! @gabytx12, my cabinets are not the whitest white they offered. But I'm pretty sure the color is called "white", haha! I know they said their colors match up with benjamin moore colors, but I don't recall anymore what that match up was? They did give me a touch-up kit. I'm very happy with the color--and the finish--I think it's perfect :) the island is a dark brown stain, not black, maybe espresso? and we originally had a nicer wood, but downgraded to the maple that our painted cabinets are, too...and I'm happy with it! I really love the contrast of my soapstone on white cabs and the marble on my dark cabinets. It makes me so happy! And I'm also so glad that I used 2 different counter surfaces. I use them differently--and my marble is so strong and sturdy, for all the use it gets! And I feel like my soapstone is just MINE--I'm the only one who works on it--like it's my little secret :) So great!! and thanks to everyone else--CEFreeman and aokat, great to hear from you again! I know you know my troubles to get to this point! It was a long process, but if not for that process, I never would have ended up with this kitchen! It just feels so right in my house and makes my house feel complete! I'm so happy!!...See MoreCedric Owens
