Oh no! Did I make a major rose mistake?
Comments (35)I don't think 8 roses are too many to start with. That's how many I started with two years ago now. Last year I added about 30 more. This year I'm adding another 30 (I think, not sure what it was on the last count). Peace does fine here in Wisconsin, it will die to the ground but it comes back and was three to four feet tall by fall. It does get blackspot but I use that Bayer Garden Disease Control stuff and it is very simple and works well. I'd recommend leaving some room in your rose garden so you can add to it. You'll want to do some research on this forum for good cut roses once you've had more experience with roses. A good cut rose is more than just a pretty bloom - other factors to consider are how long it lasts in a vase (some very pretty roses only last a few hours) or how well it perfumes a room (some of the cut roses have very little scent). Check out Palatine roses as they have a great selection of beautiful cut roses. For other nurseries, be sure to check Dave's Garden Watchdog for feedback from gardeners. Some of those pretty catalogs look good but don't deliver what they promise. When you get your roses in the spring be sure to plant them deep. Don't over-do the fertilizer as they won't need any right away. And if they don't turn out well then don't give up. One of the roses I thought would be great turned out not to do very well for me, it was a different color than I thought it would be and didn't bloom much. It died over the winter and I replaced it this year with a different rose that was much closer to the color I really wanted and that rose has done much better. I hope they all survive the winter, but if they don't it means an open spot that I can get another rose to fill....See MoreIs there another rose I should get From RU?
Comments (13)I have lots of fun googling all the suggestions -- so pretty! I emailed Pat and she replied: that Morning Has Broken is a great yellow, very disease resistant. She hasn't noticed if it has throns. (Can anyone tell me?) And here is a list she gave me of some other light ones that have few thorns or none: Marie Pavie Gruss an Aachen Pink Gruss an Aachen Misty Dawn Echo Lime Sublime I think I am deciding now between Morning Has Broken and Marie Pavie -- which do you think would be better for a no-spraying rose newbie who will probably make a lot of mistakes?...See Morebougainvillea...roses....oh, my!
Comments (5)Mary Lou, I can't wait to see roses with bougainvillea!! I'm sorry your roses didn't come through. Can you get a few of the rainbow knockouts locally? I have not seem them for sale here. Heck, I'm still looking for a PINK knockout at a decent price. The rainbow are beautiful and would look great with the Julia Child rose I bought last weekend. There is something satisfying about going outside and seeing a pot ghetto. Mine is constant. I have 6 roses waiting to be planted. I don't even have beds made for them all yet!!! Comments (104)To bzamp58 Hi, I make and decorate cakes. I have NO trouble at all with my recipes for doing cakes. I always use the roller. Just make sure you do the wet ingredients first. The add the dry. My cakes are light, moist, fluffy. (As with all recipes and the DLX the wet should go in first dry last). Thanksgiving...Whip Cream! My granddaughter is not too familiar with my DLX...was using white bowl and beaters, she said I can do the whip cream Gram. Huh well we had chunky almost butter whip cream! The look on her face was priceless. How we laughed! Just added a tablespoon of cream to the 2 cups whipped and consistency was fine for the pumpkin pie! And I am thrilled this year to have my DLX for all my Christmas cookie orders! So much easier! Last year I used my 1980 Kitchen Aid and did 3000 cookies in three weeks. I had been so booked with wedding cookies so got a late start! Still got a late start this year cause we did a total "kitchen make-over"! But now my wonderful DLX and new kitchen...I am so blessed! Time to get Pecan Tassies out of oven. May all have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!...See Morerandman zone 8b
