Crepe Myrtle Pruning - Crafting New Growth into Trunk
Comments (4)A friend just gave me a small (abt 2.5 ft tall) bushy crepe myrtle she'd dug from her yard and potted in a one-gallon container last fall. The cultivar, she said is Lagerstroemia Purple Magic. The plant is obviously rootbound now, but that's not the main problem. This morning, I was going to remove it from the pot, straighten out the roots then repot in a 5-gallon container so I can nurse it along after the trauma of repotting. I planned to plant it around the middle of Sept. The big problem I now see is that someone cut the ONE main trunk back to about six inches. There are two skinny branches coming out near the bottom of that main trunk (they are not coming out of the soil) and a few tiny shoots near the base. Now I'm wondering if it's worth all the time and trouble to repot and eventually plant, since the 1" thick main trunk is missing. I never cut the top of the main growth of anything unless I want to stop it from growing taller. I've never had a crepe myrtle, so I don't know if it will grow taller without that trunk (my friend's trees are about 8' tall)? Please help with this, it's too hot here to waste a drop of energy for a plant that will remain a small shrub forever....See MoreSome new, some old and some new growth.
Comments (13)Thanks Randy North of Florida palms has the best deals on Princeps I have seen, that's where I got the 3 I have -one is planted. Seeing them up close might leave you a little more torn between the two. That said,I love Waggies too! Here's the One I have planted- chadec I know exactly what you mean about Aloifolia! Mine snapped(in high winds)2 years ago or it would be 6' right now at least! They root easily so,no worries there-mine is secured to a small post now...probably would have been halved anyway when the "G-house collapsed in the blizzard last winter. Here's a picture(s) of the Cactus cover - Note how tall it is in respect to the railing- and check put what it looked like collapsed under 15"+ of snow! Here is a link that might be useful: Princeps...See MoreWhite crystal like substance coming out of trunk :-(
Comments (11)This is not good, looks like Fusarium. A new beetle that vectors a Fusarium dieback on avocado trees has been discovered in and near Los Angelesin 2013. Symptoms of Fusarium dieback disease Look for a single entry/exit hole with surrounding white powdery exudate that is either dry, or surrounded by wet discoloration of the outer avocado tree bark. During the early stages of colonization, there may not be any visible injury to the bark. Scrape off bark around an infected area or entry/exit hole to look for brown discolored necrosis caused by the fungus. The entry hole on an avocado tree is about 0.033 inches wide. The beetle larvae live in galleries within the tree and feed on the fungus. Examine the area around the gallery for the discolored necrosis caused by the fungus....See MoreNew Growth on Mango Plant Dying
Comments (16)Greetings, and sorry to hear about the mango change-ups. To answer your question: I still can't entirely figure out what the deal with mine is. The above suggestions to ensure full drainage helped a lot, but didn't entirely resolve my plant weirdness -- which has become something I sort of live with anymore. I'm starting to wonder if it isn't perhaps the mango response to heat and variations of that. I notice in colder months the new growth die-back is fairly regular, and less frequent (yet still visible) as things heat up. The browning of the new leaf tips and eventual drop-off is frustrating, but clearly not (necessarily) fatal: The plant continues to hang in there throughout winter, and manages to grow in spring and summer despite some of the new stuff checking out. As I say, weird, but nothing too bad. Tried soap-based insecticides in case that might be it; Neem oil solutions as well (the latter of which helps a bit, but doesn't eradicate the problem). Apart from that, I just keep an eye on it and let it do as it will. So far so good, and in any case less fragile than my papaya plants. Man, I'm scared to even look at them in fear they'll decide to get sick on me again!...See Moreannniek
