My system is to not use them. I used to go through all the things you listed plus more. Then I realized that I was purchasing things just because I had a coupon not because I needed or sometimes even wanted them. No longer using coupons and carefully waiting for things to go on sale has cut the amount I was spending. I did notice that many of the things that went on sale went on sale just after the coupon expired. Some times the sale price was less that the price with the coupon.

It seems that it isn't so much the "system," but rather a time commitment to the system you have. Maybe you want to sent aside a few minutes, say, each Monday or before each shopping trip to organize your coupons. Unfortunately, you're going to have to remember to bring them along and bring them back in from the car. If you are a women, will your little organizer fit in your purse (bigger purse or smaller organizer??)

What might make some sense is to make your shopping list, check for any items on sale, and then pull those coupons before you leave the house. Obviously not everything on sale is listed in the circular, so if you see that tuna is on sale, you check your folder for a coupon in the store.

Many years back I just used a shoe box and envelopes. Certainly not the most fashionable approach but it worked... <lol>

I do the grocery shopping for my home. I use a plastic file identical to the OP's and cull out the expired ones monthly. I shop from a list of needed supplies and do not purchase things simply because I have a coupon. (However is "on the list" I might purchase, say, two, to satisfy a coupon.) "The list" is a tablet kept on a kitchen counter and added to by my wife and I as things run out.

Years ago I kept an Excel Spread Sheet organized by Aisle Location. My wife and I would simply check off needs the day before I shopped. We stopped doing that because we were BOTH guilty of adding unneeded I items.

As a 24 year retired US Navy Submariner I am entitled to shop for groceries at Military Commissaries. The Commissary, by law, sells at cost plus a 6% markup. No loss leaders, no sales unless the wholesale price is lowered by the supplier. The result is about a 30% grocery basket savings compared to the local supermarkets.

The Commissary does accept coupons and they also have an App that allows me to clip virtual coupons on-line and save them to an account in the cloud. When I start the checkout process at the Commissary I present a dongle on my Key Chain to the checker - she swipes it and it knows what virtual coupons I have saved.

At the end of the checkout process the cash register compares my purchases to my virtual coupons and gives me any discounts earned.

It does take some effort and discipline, but it saves me a lot of money - and I make no unnecessary additional purchases simply because I have a coupon.
