White Groundcover Roses & Cape Diamond Shrub Climber Rose

Would anyone be able to give me a suggestion as to which Groundcover to purchase (or not)? I'm in between White Meidiland Groundcover, Wedding Dress Groundcover, and Blossom Blanket Groundcover.

On a separate note, would Cape Diamond Shrub Climber Rose do well in poor soil? Thank you in advance! -Chey (Southeastern, Massachusetts)

Kind of guessing a bit on some of this but information is scarce. I believe out those 3 rose White Meidiland would be the healthiest and overall best of the three. That said I did have W M and it is a big rose not tall but wide. It also tip roots where ever the canes touched the soil. Mine would easily form a 12 foot diameter circle. I just did not have that kind of room. It would be great for a hillside. So that one is robust and easy to grow.

I would stay away from Wedding Dress as the rose just came out and they seem to be getting rid of it already.

I would also be leery of Blossom Blanket. Only because it has been around a long time and is recycled occasionally by places like Jackson and Perkins and Wayside Gardens. It sounds okay on Help Me Find but I just have a feeling that it would be a problem rose outside of dry environments. Perhaps someone else has grown this one.

So a lot depends on what you need the rose to do. I have tried many ground cover roses. For a white ground cover the best I have found is a Kordes rose Innocencia. It's very healthy and a much smaller size which works for me. There is also a newer drift rose in white that looks good. Not really sure if it is a new and improved white or the old one that they used to sell.

I do grow 2 Cape diamond roses. They are own root and have massive root systems. I do think that she would do well in poor soil as long as it's not too wet. She is a large shrub so give her room.

I have 2 White Meidiland & adore them, their blooms are fantastic, nice wider than tall bushes. I don't let mine get as big as Patty's, I cut them back hard in late winter & they grow 4-5' wide in a season. They are in constant bloom & very healthy, wouldn't be without them. This will be their 4th season.Sorry, I don't have any experience with the others.

I'm in zone 5 NW Indiana. I grow mostly all shrub roses plus a few hybrid teas and climbers. Mine all survive our winters with minimal protection, just oak leaves. Many do require severe pruning but all are blooming by late May/early June. The hybrid Rugosas are extremly hardy. Following is a list you can chose from that I've had for a number of years. Cape Diamond rose, anybody?

This is mine's 3rd year. It's grown quite large and sprawls at lot. The bush is some 5 feet wide right now but so far the canes are not long enough to be a climber. It's no more than two feet high as the canes spread out, not up. If they did it would be at least 4 feet tall or a little more. It's very hardy also. I grow mine as a free standing shrub and it blooms repeatedly. I do deadhead.

Lime, Why of course your input is not too late! I have not ordered anything yet! I really want to give everyone time to chime in on this and tell me of their experiences. Paying that much for roses, I am not going to be in a big hurry to order from anybody! You stated: "the Heirloom Roses are very expensive for the size." Several others have made the same comment. Approximately, how small are we talking about here? Twelve inches. . .or less? Puts me in mind of the "special" trees I ordered from the Arbor Foundation....TREES? The biggest were only 12 inches tall! Only two of the 15 trees survived the first winter and we have had two relatively mild winters since then for Oklahoma. The 2 Roses of Sharon "gifts" are doing fine - they have finally grown to around 12 inches tall. For the same amount, I got three times as many trees on eBay and of the varieties I chose, not what they chose to send me. Lessons learned. So no, I am in no hurry to order my roses. There is still plenty of time for planting roses in my cottage garden this season. Of course, some of the same roses I can buy locally from a little private nursery I discovered not far from here. I can buy them for the same price, but a much bigger plant in a huge pot, ready to bloom this year. (I have my eye on a Smoke Tree, a River Birch clump and a beautiful 'Bloodgood' Red Japanese Maple that she has to sell. Already small trees and very healthy. She set them aside for me. Just gorgeous!) :) But of course, she only has a few of the rose varieties I seek. The rest I will need to order. Thanks to all for their great comments and suggestions. I received my 3 DAs from Wayside Gardens (last day sale) yesterday, planted them today after soaked them over night. Just received 2 bare root rose trees from JP today (ordered on their last day sale after 11:00pm :-), I was just testing them out, didn't think the order could go through). I have been watering all my newly planted bare root roses everyday. Helen, What's the temp in CA? You might need shade and a lot of water for those bare root DAs. What are the names of your DAs? I got Gentle Hermione, Olivia and Heathcliff.

You can't go wrong with either White Meidiland or Innocencia Vigorosa. Both are healthy, heavy bloomers.

I grow Cape Diamond and have heavy, rocky, clay soil. However, I dig big holes - at the very least 2'x2', usually larger - and backfill with compost and nutrients and a little native soil. I'm growing mine, which is own root, on an obelisk to control all those long canes.

Of all the roses that will survive, even thrive, under rigorous growing conditions I doubt a better candidate than Cape Diamond could be found.

Full sun is a must, though. Ample watering, fertilizing, and well mulched poor, but excellent draining soil, will do for this likable thug of a rose. You get the benefit of fragrance, too. The individual blooms have a shortish life, three days usually, but flower output is generous all season long. Flowers are produced in tight clusters, 5-6 buds each cluster, with short necks. The individual blooms are nicely shaped when full open with their attractive yellow bosses showing.

I believe Cape Diamond grown as a climber, which means some training as it is fastened to its support structure, will control the rampant, somewhat disorderly growth habit it shows when grown as a free standing, unsupported bush. It needs lots of room grown as a bush...6-7 feet across!

Cape Diamond is a much under used rose. You will love it. I do, but it is too big for my garden. I had to remove it, much to my regret.

Give it time to get established. It will take off in due time in like manner as climbers are prone to do, after the universally typical climbing rose slow start.
