OT - WWYD about house guests?
Comments (97)dee-dee - where are you? Is your school district planning to do the same thing? with all the snow days, we're already going to the end of June. I can see closing the school where the infected child was attending, but *all* the schools in the district, K-12? I assume you have one fully functional bath downstairs? How old are your kids? Hopefully not teenagers who spend an hour at a time in there! I am definitely a perfectionist - though when it comes to tearing walls out b/c a header is crooked, I'm learning that cutting the sheetrock so the casing lays flat is "good enough". I spent yesterday AM while DD was on field trip (I didn't have to drive) skimming some spots around my bay window so the baseboard wouldn't have a huge gap behind it. Anything under 1/4" we can caulk, but over that just really needed joint compound (with stained trim, can't hide as much with caulk and paint). My cousin is meticulous, but as he said, he knows how fussy he *can* be, whereas I know how I want things, but don't really know what's possible, or possible with a reasonable amount of effort. He did finally call. DS is sick with a high fever, but dr didn't say it was serious. They're not in the same district (though his ds and my dd attend the same preschool), so there really isn't any way he could have been exposed to anyone in our district who may have been exposed to the kid who just got back from Mexico. He doesn't have a cell phone, so couldn't call me when the landscaping ran late. I don't know why his DW couldn't call me back when she heard the message (maybe figured he'd be home soon enough, maybe figured I'm *his* cousin calling for *him* to work, so let *him* deal with me). It just drives me crazy waiting for someone who never shows and doesn't call when they're late/can't make it. He is a good carpenter and just a sweet guy, so I'll wait until he's available again, just keep finishing what I can so it's ready for him to nail up or miter. Some day, maybe 5 years from now ;-), my house will finally be finished, with floors that *stay* installed, and a bath for the kids/guests, and my soaking tub (Calgon, take me away!!). Then I can start thinking about replacing the laminate countertops and doing a tile or stone b/s ;-), maybe even repaint the ceilings LOL! Thanks for letting me vent....See Moreurgent! wwyd?
Comments (17)Hmmm, I had no idea my dining chairs had "looked odd" now for 30 years. ;-D When we bought our dining furniture we bought 2 armchairs and 4 side chairs. The table is 48" round and has 2 leaves so becomes oval. Years ago we often used it with the 2 armchairs (for DH and I) and 3 side chairs for the kids. Never thought it looked "odd" at all. IMO this is a very usual configuration of chairs and armchairs are so much more comfortable. Even when we have only 2 guests now we sometimes use 2 of each. The only downside I see is that hosts have 'better' chairs than guests and to remedy that I've sometimes used two other non-matching armchairs when we have 2 guests. Sometimes with more guests I mix it up even more by adding another dining armchair that matches nothing else! When Grands visit I even use a bench with back for 2 to sit together which they seem to like - it doesn't match anything else either! It's very informal around here tho. Personally, I'd be more tempted to think that someone who only had side chairs just didn't want to spend the extra money for armchairs. Of course you have the option of buying 2 armchairs later. We've occasionally had 6 people around the table without using the leaves altho it's quite 'cosy' - works OK if some are children tho. I don't see the difference in whether it's a kitchen/breakfast table or dining table in case that's a consideration for some. So interesting to hear other opinions....See MorePics--WWYD?
Comments (21)I would just like to clarify before I say any of this ... that I have been punched in the face by a drunk chick that came into my home trying to get to my sister for some perceived wrong... someone that was supposed to be my sisters friend and I ended up sporting a cruel black eye for months and have a scar around my eye brow... But, here are my thoughts... BM obviously has some serious issues. She was intoxicated and some people do things intoxicated that they would never normally do. She was emotional and distraught and the woman who she obviously compares herself to in her worst moments (ie the your such a great mother better than me nonsense) stepped into her path and she was unable to control herself. A whole mess of wrong to say the least... but what would pressing charges accomplish? In my mind's eye you have the possibility of what... sending your step sons mom to jail?... I mean, I totally understand the sheer volume of anger involved in that kind of personal assualt. But, my biggest concern would be that she gets some help to better support her son. If it were me (and it was me at one time) I would tell her that she needs help and now is the time to do it. I mean definately use it to get ss out of harms way... but use it as an opportunity to perhaps let the family court to tell her to get help so she can be the mom that somewhere in her drunken haze she wants to be. I would even perhaps give her the option of seeing her in court or her getting some treatment. I dont know... like I said maybe I am to soft. But, I do know one thing for sure. In hindsight I am glad I didnt press charges on the girl. It would have far more permanently wrecked her life than me telling her that she has a serious issue that she needs to take care of. She lost a lot that night without going to court over hitting me. Bm is very possibly about to lose a lot because of that night (her son)... My friend got her reality check... maybe this could be bm's ... without the additional court proceedings. You definately have to do what you think is right... but I wonder if what is right is pressing charges... or is it more right to to as sweeby said and use it as leverage to accomplish something positive overall....See MoreWWYD? Fabricator can no longer fabricate.
Comments (37)The fabricator referred me to a friend of his who works at the local design center, and occasionally takes on clients on the side. (Much like I take on the occasional design client but he has a business and to-the trade accounts). As an added bonus, the showroom he works for is a local dealer for a specific brand of wool velvet cut broadloom (another old school product), so I now have a resource for that, possibly. I don't know, I can't get upset about things like this, that are nobody's fault. I get stressed out, I may be preoccupied by it, but I can't really get angry about something like this. Much worse things happen to people than leaky roofs, bad plumbing and delays. I am lucky that I can at least afford to get it fixed even if that takes the budget away from fun stuff. I make a joke in a way about dodging the bullet of the contractor who ended up in jail for vehicular homicide, but the reality of that story is that he ran over a well-loved community activist who was crossing the street at the wrong time. Even if he had started work for me that tragedy would have far outweighed the inconvenience and lost money I would have had on my end. I really try to put all this stuff into perspective. Living in a house that is disrupted longer than you want and is esthetically embarrassing not a big deal in the scheme of life....See Moremaddielee
