Who cares for the plants while away? Do you get away?
Comments (23)Hey everyone....Thanks for all your tips and experiences... Larry....How are you? lol..You are too funny...I once almost hired a kid to water mine until he watered my fakes plastic ones too... Danielle..Congrats on that...If I meant away for a week and someone forgot to water my plants for just two days, many would croak..I've thought of having just succulents, but I can't seem to do away with my fragrant ones... Linda..Yes it has been a while..What's happening? I hope your fish made it this year..Boy it was brutal...All mine did. The water never froze because I kept it turbulent..Thanks for visiting and your ideas.. I'm sure you would do that for me. You are so kind:-))) Planto..Thank you so much..Yes, it is a bummer..It makes my heart heavy with sadness..Such a good guy and destroying his family...I hope he recovers. He loves my plants and the thought of taking care of them got him and I excited.. Purple...I am so glad you got to go away and came back to no issues...That's my plan...I hope you had a great time..You needed it I am sure.. Yes, being able to wake up and go to bed any time you want is something I have not done in years...Not to have to look at the clock is a luxery..I miss those days. I live in Northern Ma...Just on the border of N.H almost near the coast....So it can get cold here still by May which leaves me no choice except to wait until the end of May when all are safe outside. Ia m hoping to go to Florida..Far from here. I tried that stay home and relax thing and it did not work out. All I wanted to do was work on the house and more..Not good. I am talking about sleeping on a beach for days or reading a book on a chair at teh beach or by a pool, maybe Pugs house, Laurs or Patty's..lol I get up at 5 every day, run a cleaning buisiness, then work full time..Work out 4 days a week after work at 8 pm and then care for my parents about that. I also care for my home, feed the birds, cat, fish and plants...lol MIke...See MoreDo you get to spend time away from your plants? How?
Comments (34)i began switching my houseplants - mostly aglaonemas - into a hydroculture set up about 2+ years ago. i tend to use the Pot-in-Saucer method described in the link below. the beauty of this type of grow method is that it is basically impossible to over water plants. and the water line in the clear saucer makes it simple enough that a 5th grader can figure out if you need to add more. so it's nearly impossible to under water either. this past year my husband's father became ill and died, and we've been away for long stretches of time. by placing the pots in larger reservoir tubs, and having a friend drop by to check on things once in a while, i've been able to be gone for 3 or 4 weeks at a time, multiple times, without losing any plants. they can easily go 2 weeks without anyone checking on them. [when i'm home, i place the plants back in the smaller reservoir trays because i think that it's healthier for them. this gives them about a 1 to 2 week watering interval for most plants.] i feel like i'm still learning about my method - for instance, proper fertilization levels and such - but most plants have done well for me. i'm convinced that if i hadn't made the switch, i wouldn't have any surviving plants after this past year... and unfortunately, the next few years are likely to be more of the same. if anyone is interested in this method, check out the link below. there is also a lot of good info on the First Ray's website. his information is mostly slanted toward orchids, but it applies to houseplants as well. please don't think i'm implying that this method is 'no work' or 'perfect', but the question was about vacations, and i think that this is where this method shines. the snags, or complaints, are that the pots are heavy, the Hydroton media is expensive, and if you don't water and fertilize properly you can salt up the media and kill your plants. and if you decide to give it a try, as with any dramatic change... try switching a few test plants first, not your prized specimen or your grandmother's favorite plant. cheers, nancy Here is a link that might be useful: Houseplant Hydroculture...See MoreHow do you collect iris seeds before they get away from you?
Comments (3)a small square of muslin or piece of pantyhose might be useful for catching them. I record the date of pollenation, and pick my pods around 8 to 10 weeks later, and just store them inside until they are ready to open. Once they are brown and fairly dry I open them by hand if they haven't split yet....See Morestudent 1st apt away from home Need help with kitchen colors please.
Comments (64)Sheen? You don't want gloss for your walls. With white appliances and window/door trim, you can take your pick of colors for the wall but do remember ... If your apartment is small, lighter colors of paint are probably a better idea since darker colors can visually shrink a room. That said, an accent wall in your bright bold favorite color could be a good thing. As you decide what color(s) you're going to paint your rooms, think about how well the color(s) in one room will blend with the colors in the adjacent space. (To state the obvious, beach colors and goth will not blend well.) If you and your girlfriend are on a tight budget, you might want to experience the adventure of checking out nearby Habitat for Humanity Restore Stores. One HfHRS near me frequently has cans of paint in different brands-- some actually full and others nearly full -- where someone bought more than they needed and donated what was left of it. Spring and summer are the seasons for building and rennovating so you're likely to find construction items through fall. The larger stores will have more room and more stuff. If you don't find anything of interest on the first visit or two, do a walkthrough occasionally. [ Just before the holidays, it seems you can find a lot more interesting furnishings (perhaps its people wanting to upgrade before their relatives visit?). You might also try the larger GoodWill stores and nearby charity thrift stores. When you walk through, do so with a critical eye -- think of it as visiting an urban museum -- and don't get in the habit of buying things you don't actually need.] A bit of unsolicited advise -- stuff to consider: When furnishing a small space, remember to buy furnishings that are of a smaller scale. A round table with a pedestal and chairs with legs that are mostly vertical -- as oppesed to splayed -- are less likely to be knee knockers, groin jabbers and/or toe stubbers. Small lightweight items and/or items with wheels are much easier to move about, including for cleaning. Taller storage pieces (tall chest of drawers vs. low dresser w/mirror above) will get you more room for the amount of floor space used. Getting the most use out of what items you do choose to furnish your place is another good idea -- his/her lockable wood two drawer filing cabinets as bed side tables and/or living room end tables can help secure items when y'all have nosy visitors: it has been said that every party has that one guest that opens the medicine cabinet and a few unlocked doors. Tables with shelves below can provide storage but take more dusting. A used hutch w/glass doors (top part of a china cabinet) can be used as a china cabinet and/or double as a tv stand and/or a bookcase and/or a curio cabinet w/less dusting than displaying collectibles on open shelves. Less time cleaning means more time for enjoying other things. Let us know how your project turns out; good luck to the both of you....See Morepippiep
