As a proud owner of Doric White to another proud owner-isn't it an amazing color?:)

I've no experience in whitewash but I have a feeling it's like with anything else-try paints, and only then you'll know. Even if you take the same Doric White-it will look different on that fireplace, because the texture of the wood and brick is different from the texture on the walls. Different texture will reflect color differently. So add Doric White to your samples when trying..who knows you might love it in its different reincarnation.

I like the beam light. True, I haven't seen it dark-might change my mind. Feels very harmonious for now, though.

As for the accent wall..it's a nice wall but it's harder for me to understand the point of making it accent?..Usually accent walls make sense if you want to underscore something, like an opening or column or niches or some change in architecture. Your wall has a very nice window(as far as I can see) but seems too narrow..unless you were meaning the whole big triangle around the staircase?

I don't know. Color is very personal, and just about any rule about it can be broken if you're sure about what you want. I would probably introduce color in art and fabrics (say)rather than paint, in your particular case..but if you still want to try-do bigger samples of paint colors on A4 size paper, two layers of paint on each so you can see the color in its true form..now these samples are too small and also close to each other..changes your perception of color. Leave also white background around these samples, pure white, so again you can the the sample for what it is. Doric White is called white but you know it's not exactly white lol..and changes like crazy with light ..so it will slightly change your perception of other colors too. You don't want that to happen when you choose your samples. Also, separate pieces of paper are easier to move along the wall and look at them in a darker corner, in a lighter corner, next to that window, close to the floor, etc..and thus, make a better decision faster. It's really easy to make these; you'd be probably done with all of them while I'm typing it.

PS I have Seagull Wall too, in one of the other rooms-sometimes it looks identical to Doric White so much it's funny. Other times, it's such a nice taupe. I love the colors that constantly change, they're harder to nail, and more elusive, and you feel like figuring out a person..:) with its own character and all that jazz.

April, your post really made me smile! I have decided to white wash using a slightly lighter version of Doric White & using Doric white on the insert. So the wall with the arches opposite to the fireplace -- I was just feeling like the room felt almost too light/bright (is that odd) if I had that huge wall, going up the staircase, in the same Doric White. Was thinking introducing the Seagulls Wail was not enough contrast (as you said, it almost looks like Doric White in a shadow) but wanted to create a bit more visual interest for that wall. It too is a tall wall with several faces - along the stairs and also, just when you walk in the front door, it is the huge wall to the right of you (25 feet high). Oy... I'm just not so good at this! Or maybe I shouldn't complicate things anymore... Any other thoughts are welcome too!

Oh, and the painter used the wrong color paint on the beam, creating it in Pewter Patter. This would then connect the beam to the wall ? Just a thought. I can change the beam color - that was his error.

Depends where you're at-my previous living with its huge ceilings and windows would make me blind if it was white..so if you're in sunny CA for example-no, not odd at all))

I feel though it's hard to be helpful with specific suggestions..I for example was sure the beam is painted Doric white as well. The colors are just hard to see in the photos..I tried to take pics of my new place, and only some pics kinda convey the color for what it is. Others..don't ask. I'm not a great photographer too. And the light is not always letting us to take a true pic.

In short. Make these samples. Take a day for looking at them-morning light, afternoon light, artificial light in the evening. Move them along so they are close to other colors in the room..you'll see the flow, and whether they make sense one with another, and whether you like the contrast, be it subtle or bold. Next morning, look again with a fresh eye-and you'll know. Well..as much as one can know until the paint fully covers that wall..:)
