Problem with DVD drive

One of my computers is an 8-year old Sony All-in-One running Vista. Recently I've been having problems with the DVD drive. It will play a music CD and I can install software from a disc. However, it will no longer play movies: when you insert a disc, it makes a series of clicking sounds for 15-20 seconds, but won't play the movie. I also tried to burn a copy of a music CD that played fine on it, but the iTunes burn operation failed. In Device Manager it's identified as an Optiarc BD ROM BC-5600S ATA Device, and it says "This device is working properly."

Does this sound like a hardware issue, or what? Drives are so cheap, I would just replace it, but tearing into an All-in-One is a royal pain, and you need to worry about having a pretty exact replacement. Any suggestions on what I can try, other than buying an external replacement?

Have you tried using other program to watch movies from?

How about a different program for burning CD/DVD's?

How about Microsoft Media Player, or CyberLink Power DVD Player to play the movies with?

Do you have Nero or Roxio Easy Media Creator, could use either of those to Burn CD/DVD's with?

Many of these programs are included with Big Name Brand Computers, you may have them but have just never used them!

If you don't have any of those, there are always Free Programs you could use.

In my experience, the click-sound has always meant that failure-mode has begun. If it was a newer computer, I would get another drive...but that's just me. However, I would waste no effort on an 8 yr old Vista. For other reasons, I plan to replace the 9 yr old Vista box I'm using right now with another desktop...but not an all-in-one.

The resolution was short -lived. Problem happened again and the noise after the paper clip insertion persisted until the computer is shut down. During the shutdown process, the DVD drive ran ever faster-- until I feared for my safety. I unplugged the computer. The drive opened after reboot. The information about the drive is in my original post. Looks as if the (ATA) drive is an obsolete bird and only used ones are available. Not to my liking. As best I can tell, my computer was built 4/14/2010-- not so long ago from my perspective. Obsolete already? So I need a new DVD drive. Please suggest a good one, compatible with my computer. Mike, I have an Inspiron 1545 - is this what you mean? Let me know if you need more info. I would still like to download the driver for my laptop, but how do I do that? I do consider myself "adventerous", but not when it comes to computers, haha. owbist: thanks so much for the info, but like I told Mike, I don't feel comfortable when working on the hardware in computers. This morning I'm NOT able to burn a CD, but right before that I was able to play a movie. I don't know what is going on. Now I'm sure I'm not able to watch a movie either. So, how do I "download" this driver file. I see it, and it is actually in my download folder, but when I try to download it, it says there are no files to download. When it says download, it says "save file", not RUN, like I want it too. Any suggestions on this? Thanks! I appreciate all the advice.

Okay Now! Here is my best guess as to your problem: You didn't delete your drive because it is hardware and the only way to delete it is to physically remove it. What you have done is you've removed the Driver for the hardware. What you need to do is to find what and who manufactured the drive and then find a new driver for it. For instance, my optical drive is a: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH15F ATA Device [Optical drive] Now just for the heck of it, I put that info into a Google search and came up with this site: Driver-list The driver for my drive is listed here and all I have to do is to download it and install it. You can go to your device manager and click on DVD/CD-ROM drives to see what yours is and then TRY to run a search for a driver from there or you can come back here for more help. Very easy to do, both discs look very much alike. The DVD and Blu-Ray on the Front of the Disc is hard to see sometimes, I've got to be wearing my Glasses to be sure! Hope you Good luck with Windows 10. I like it and haven't had any problems with any of my computers or tablets that have the upgrade. I did have a problem with one of my tablets but it wasn't Windows 10, the Touchscreen happened to stop working shortly after the Win 10 upgrade (Not Microsoft's fault)!
