It has been showing up on and off during the summer and fall, but in the last weeks, it has been mostly in the yard around the feeder. It sits right by it and then flies to it every so often.

No, they don't feed at night so you are safe bringing your feeders in to prevent freezing. Mine are showing up at the feeders before its completely light, approx. 7 - 7:15 AM. I know your daytime temps have been in that range where the nectar will freeze so you may have to keep an eye on them during this storm, either change them or do some thawing. Other storms here, I've resorted to adding more syrup heated in the microwave, my hair blower, and duct taping hand warmer packets to the feeders. Kind of a hassle and since I've been working from home, its almost as easy for me just to swap out feeders or dump and refill them.

Your hummer is an Anna's. They are year round residents in much of the PNW. I saw one at my brothers Christmas day (Raleigh Hills) and they don't feed them, it was at the winter blooming camellias.

If you think you have a feeder not being used or being ignored, you could tie a piece of red ribbon to it to attract them. DH has a red wool hat he sometimes wears in winter, he can barely get from the house to his truck without them flying into his face ;0)

Watch for the freezing rain that is supposed to begin falling there, check to make sure the feeding ports haven't iced over. I've been keeping an eye on your weather, my mother is now living in a retirement facility there, I've been worried about her getting to a store for her breakfast things. She has lunch, dinner in the dining room but won't sign up for the breakfast program. My brother took her this morning ;0)

We're just SW of Portland and feed the hummingbirds thru the winter and during the coldest weather we have at least 40 that show up to feed. Most of them are Anna's but there are a few Rufus' in the mix. This past storm was really tough on everyone and over the years we've learned to keep extra feeders already filled in the house (next to a heater) and then change them out as needed. Once the temps get below freezing we have to change the feeders hourly since the water will get so cold the feeding ports will start to freeze in minutes. We use the large feeders (with 6 ports) and can usually go an hour without changing them, but during that hour we have to go out and shake them to keep the ports open. After observing them for awhile you will soon be able to tell when they aren't getting any nectar. They don't sit and take long drinks and they fly around the feeders acting restless. In between feedings they usually sit in nearby trees & shrubs.

morz8 is correct about timing. We bring the feeders in once the last bird has left to roost....usually just before dark.......and at daybreak they're out there waiting for my husband to bring out the first batch.

Also, they can become very picky about the location of the feeders so try not to move them once they start feeding well in a certain location. We found they really like the areas under the roof overhang. Keeps them out of the snow and rain!

If you have just a few hummers, put up at least 2 feeders..........there's ALWAYS a bully!

Thank you both for your advice. I had two red feeders out - one on a branch low, so the wind wouldn't move it, and one under the patio roof probably about 15 yards apart. When I did that, it seemed they did not come back to either one.

So I took the one down under the roof because the other one was there first and the bird seemed to always go there. And now that one is being used again (empty and poop traces). Could it be that two feeders cause issues?

We had about 3-4 birds and one was chasing the others away. Is it better to have multiple feeders out of each others eye sight, so nobody zips around like crazy?

Oh the birds survived the freezing rain fine while we were swapping constantly.....

I think the recommendation is to have feeders not within sight of each other if that's possible. But I have two in front, one in back off the kitchen. And I watch the hummingbirds fly up and over the roof regularly, as though they are checking to make sure no one is getting a share anywhere ;0) So, they will still 'zip around like crazy'. If its very cold or stormy, two might sit down side by side, only briefly, its a short lived truce.

I don't know why they fight like they do when there is plenty to go around. 18 hummingbirds could feed at one time from my feeders. I don't plan on that ever happening. If one of us are standing too close to one of the feeders, we can count on a tiny but severe scolding that can startle me when I should be used to it.
