laminate countertops (wood look alike or marble lookalike)
Comments (3)I am with rmkitchen on the IKEA butcherblock. It may even cost less than laminate!! I have a wood laminate in my kitchen that I will be ripping out (I HATE it). "Butcher block" laminates were common in the 1970s and early 1980s. I would worry about how it would look. Some of the granite and marble laminate look alikes I think are much better looking than the wood look-alikes. I have seen the IKEA bb in person, and we will be considering it for our island. It really is a great bargain, an they have several woods to choose from- I believe oak, birch and beech. You can also stain any of these. From what I underatnd from the salespeople there, the beech has a pinkish undertone but would take a darker stain better than the birch. The birch has the clearest grain pattern, followed by beech, and then of course, oak....See Morecombining formica and marble in one kitchen - will it work?
Comments (28)At first thought I don't think the formica/marble combo sounds great to me but I can sometimes suffer from a lack of imagination..... Regarding designing around the stove....I respect not wanting to replace something that works. (I'm too shallow to do it, but I respect it) So, I say keep the stove just don't make your expensive and hard to replace design decisions around it. Make those decisions as if the stove were going to break in 3-5 years and you were going to be forced to buy a new one. What would you get? I think you could do marble everywhere and keep the stove. Just accent with a few retro things to keep the overall look kind of casual and tie the stove in. When it comes right down to it, marble is just a light counter top. If that looks good with your cabinets and floor and everything else I don't think the stove will be a deal breaker....See MoreHorrible Mistake to use Formica 180fx Calacatta Marble?
Comments (65)@Brenda Hagel do you mind me asking what the cost of your countertop was? My kitchen looks like a similar size (maybe a bit bigger), and I love the look of the Calacutta Marble but am worried it will be considerably more expensive than a regular Formica laminate. Does anyone know the difference in cost between regular laminate and the 180fx series? Is the 180fx still a high pressure laminate? Thanks for your help. P.S. I am in Canada, so please specify if talking about USD or CAD, thanks!...See MoreCountertop woes& Formica in-depth solid surface countertop
Comments (5)I had an estimate from HD for quartz and Corian. The Quartz (LG or Silestone) was a little cheaper even if I added the cost of the sink. Is the estimate based on paying for a whole slab? i am still working on my decision but know I want a white marble look. Besides HD I found a place that sells some quartz by the sq foot. A remnant might work for us too as long as it is the right look. Do you think you'd be happy with the remnant? Unless a big difference in price or way out of your budget, I'd try to find something you will really be happy with....See Moreravencajun Zone 8b TX
