I think I have a picea pungens 'baby blue' pendula
Ive got about 8 or so picea pungens 'baby blue' and 1 is clearly different than the rest. The first two pics are of the weeper (taken on opposite sides of tree). The other two pics are of two typical looking picea pungens 'baby blue'. How rare (or common) is something like this? When I bought it I did select it from about 150 and subliminally (or something) I remember sensing something different but it didnt register at the time. What do you think?

There is a flaw in the post with a double photo of R.H. Montgomery' Without a doubt the Picea p. 'Glauca Pendula' is a thing of beauty and my choice as #1. As far as the others placement is important and the color is better exemplified with the addition of companion plants to bring out the best in each one. No I don't have 'Ed Woods Blue'. Ken...You can tell the difference. The photos really don't show that difference. The 'Gentry's Gem' has a layered growth habit as opposed to the 'Globosa' with its tight growth habit. Also needles in the Gem are a little more steel gray in Summer. Ken, also your quote: how many blue blue spruce does one guy need." As for me as many as you can display without over kill. Comments (6)at least 12" per year ... i think one of my pendula did close to 18" last year go take a close look ... you will know this springs growth.. trace down the leader and you will see a differing bark pattern... last years growth and about 12 inches down.. you will see a third pattern .... and now you will know.. how it grew for the last 3 years .... subject to its pot culture.. ball and burlapping... or whatever variables we dont know about.... the growth rate will be no different than a regular pungens... just not upward .... a pic below ... a hoopsi .... it might take your transplant a few years to get chuggin on its normal rate.. until it is fully established.... ken and here is glauca pendula.. lets to its own devices .... ps: the guy at the nursery is an idiot .... 7 years agolast modified: 7 years agoThanks everyone! You have me quite excited about this tree. It is in part shade/part sun. It is tucked a little back in a wooded area but is south facing to an open field(the back side of the tree-1st pic, doesnt get as much sun as it should, and the front could probably use more as well - I was already "planted out" when I planted this). In the pic it is behind/to the right of the globe spruce on standard(middle of right side). It appears this is worth moving to a full sun location. Not sure that I have any more of those spots, but next year I will more than likely move it (when would be the best time? what about if I can move it in the next month- Ive planted conifers as late as Jan 9 (chiseling with shovel) with success. Ill figure out a better/full sun spot and replant something else if I need to make a spot. Might as well give it more ideal conditions(at least its not in my large vernal pool that lasts until August, even September some years) like other conifers I have planted -conifer islands) . Since deer have yet to mess with even a single one of my picea pungens (they prefer japanese maples, birches, willows, white pine, aspen, some picea abies,etc-they took it easy on the weeping white spruce in the pic a couple years ago) I dont think a fence will be necessary. Thanks for everyone's comments, I feel lucky to have stumbled upon this.

6 years agoUnfortunately this tree no longer weeps. The only thing I can think of is that the ground was real wet when I took the picture and maybe that caused it to weep? It is in a low area and standing water made it up to the base of the mound a few times during winter/spring. Im curious if it will weep again this winter/spring.
