First try at stippling on a table runner

I made this table runner last night and did the stippling on it today.

I have a few peaks in the stippling. The big thing for me is the consistent speed. When I slow down I get larger stitches . It's too bad there isn't a way to set a consistent speed for this type of sewing. I could get used to doing stippling.

This will take a lot more practice.

here is the photo of the stippling, you can see all my flaws. It looks like the stitching does not show up for you. I used a beige thread.

Looks awesome!

Some machines come with something called a stitch regulator but I haven't tried it.

If your machine has a way to set the maximum speed, use it. You still need to match your movement to the stitching speed but you can limit the max speed.

My table is one that DH had when we married. It was the right size for all of the kids, so I sold mine. It is blah, so I cover it with a tablecloth. I would buy a prettier table, but I can't quit spending all of my $$s on dishes and tablescape items!! So, my solution is to just use a tablecloth. I have seen some tablescapes with both tablecloth and runner that looked pretty good. I actually bought a runner to try it myself. I will post a pic when I use it if it turns out ok. Jay, I love what you do. Sounds really cool. I may have to try that. I inherited my sister's sewing machine and can't get it to work! I'm not mechanically inclined. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!! At least until I find a sewer who will take me under their wing and teach me how to use it. Betty

I just opened this thread today and read through everything. This was like a "Judith" lesson on building a vignette! Shee, your centerpiece is lovely. It has reallly transformed over the course of this thread from OK to great. I love the fabric that you first added. It really changed the whole look. Then adding height...The basket brings it together. I, too, like Betty's idea to spray paint it darker - I think it will "ground" it. I especially like the link you found with the white pumpkin on the pedestal with the fall arrangement. I'm going to shamelessly copy that one! You are definietly going to WOW your Thanksgiving guests.

My goal for the first part of 2011 is to finish another Double Wedding Ring quilt. I took a class using green and purple fabric. It was to be for DD. She changed her color scheme before I had it made so I made her DWR in browns and blues. I have all of the fabric cut for the first DWR and have made an appointment with a long arm quilter for November, 2011. I have been working on it since the first of the year. Time for some FM quilting terminology: Meandering refers to almost any relatively large-scale design that flows randomly over the surface of the quilt. You can meander vines, feathers, loose curves, almost anything. It's usually done free-hand. Stippling refers to the tiny form of curved meandering and is used in the same way that traditional hand quilted stippling was, to compress the background around a motif that you want to stand out. The link I'm including will take you to a picture of a feathered wreath with two sizes of stippling: the outside stipples are about 1/4" in diameter if the curves were closed, the center of the wreath features tiny "micro" stippling--about 1/8" diameter. If you look at the next two pictures you'll see an example of curving meanders with hearts added once in a while for interest. The fourth picture shows meandering feathers and the fifth, vines. Incidentally, the tiny, curvy stippling has been used on quilts for centuries. I know of examples of quilted petticoats from the 1700s with this type of stippling. In FM quilting, stippling is almost like a fingerprint--everyone does it a bit differently and I can often ID local long arm quilters simply by looking at the stippling/meandering on a quilt. Love the colors and style of your runner! I have a balanced stitch regulator (bar) for my machine and it still takes practice to have consistent size stitches. Don't worry we won't tell the quilt police!

I looked in my Pfaff sewing machine book and the next model of machine has the stitch regulator or power regulator. I don't remember which now.

Colors are hard for me to put together. I went through my stash looking for complimenting colors and chose a light and a dark.

I need to figure out the next new table runner pattern and do another one. I am excited to learn how to improve the stippling.

I do have a question, I had the thread break on me and had to re-thread my needle. What is the correct way to start again where the thread broke. I put the needle down about 3 stitches back from where it broke.

It looks beautiful. I find after a while I don't even notice or remember my less than perfect stitches...and no one else does either.

That's what I do - stitch over existing stitches. Maybe a few stitches in one spot,

Though I've never used it, my machine has a start/stop button. So, I could set the speed control and then turn it on avoiding the foot pedal all together. I think that would maybe help with FMQ... I'll have to try it one day. Maybe your machine has that button?

If you have a speed control, maybe find your best speed for stippling, and then all you have to do is pedal to the metal...max out your foot and then don't think about what it's doing while you move your hands.
