First try at stippling on a table runner

I made this table runner last night and did the stippling on it today.

I have a few peaks in the stippling. The big thing for me is the consistent speed. When I slow down I get larger stitches . It's too bad there isn't a way to set a consistent speed for this type of sewing. I could get used to doing stippling.

This will take a lot more practice.

here is the photo of the stippling, you can see all my flaws. It looks like the stitching does not show up for you. I used a beige thread.

Looks awesome!

Some machines come with something called a stitch regulator but I haven't tried it.

If your machine has a way to set the maximum speed, use it. You still need to match your movement to the stitching speed but you can limit the max speed.

My goal for the first part of 2011 is to finish another Double Wedding Ring quilt. I took a class using green and purple fabric. It was to be for DD. She changed her color scheme before I had it made so I made her DWR in browns and blues. I think you would not like this "birthing" method for a lap quilt. It is okay for baby quilts that get used and washed often. I used to make very large comforters using this "pillowcase" method, but I always used a backing that was either the same fabric or a very decorative coordinate. I found this to be great for a really poofy, whole cloth tied quilts, and baby quilts that were machine quilted. I always thought of these as my "cheater" quilts :). The topstitching around the edges will help. For your sister's lap quilt, I think you would be better off cutting your backing larger, trimming the front and batting like normal, and wrapping the backing to the front and topstitching forming a self binding. (I don't know the name of this method.) I think it would look nicer and lay flat, and unless she looks hard, she won't be able to tell it isn't a regular binding. Also, it is a real pain to turn a large pillowcase type quilt right sides out - probably why it is called birthing. Your Thanksgiving tablescape is very pretty. I like your squares using the new tube method.

The tree ones with the hearts is some from some fabric a friend sent me,,I buy very little fabric,as there is no where close that I can get any.Most of it is gifted to me by wonderful other quilters who share. I appreciate them so much for helping. When I do buy I watch for sales online. Almost all of my items are for sale.

OMG (& I don't say that often) it's great, great, great. I'll make it unanimous, you should pls. keep it. The color & feel of it on your table w/ that candlestick, the color staging is excellent. Sorry, I think your daughter will need to find something else ;>) Can you pls. state the pattern or where you found it? I think I need to make this too, or something like it! Love the colors and style of your runner! I have a balanced stitch regulator (bar) for my machine and it still takes practice to have consistent size stitches. Don't worry we won't tell the quilt police!

I looked in my Pfaff sewing machine book and the next model of machine has the stitch regulator or power regulator. I don't remember which now.

Colors are hard for me to put together. I went through my stash looking for complimenting colors and chose a light and a dark.

I need to figure out the next new table runner pattern and do another one. I am excited to learn how to improve the stippling.

I do have a question, I had the thread break on me and had to re-thread my needle. What is the correct way to start again where the thread broke. I put the needle down about 3 stitches back from where it broke.

It looks beautiful. I find after a while I don't even notice or remember my less than perfect stitches...and no one else does either.

That's what I do - stitch over existing stitches. Maybe a few stitches in one spot,

Though I've never used it, my machine has a start/stop button. So, I could set the speed control and then turn it on avoiding the foot pedal all together. I think that would maybe help with FMQ... I'll have to try it one day. Maybe your machine has that button?

If you have a speed control, maybe find your best speed for stippling, and then all you have to do is pedal to the metal...max out your foot and then don't think about what it's doing while you move your hands.
