Table runner prefs?

Hi everyone!

I have a pretty dining room table (I say that because I love it, and EVERYONE who visits my home says it's pretty!). I hate covering it with a tablecloth, so decided to order fabric and make some holiday table runners. :)

I only have one 18" leaf, so two table lengths to deal with -- meaning I'm making the runners in 'generic' lengths so that they should look 'ok' no matter how long the table is at the time.

I made the first in single-thickness cotton fabric (autumn leaves print), 14" wide, and with the ends coming to a point. After using it, I decided that this fabric would lay and look better if it were double thickness, so I might make the next one to be reversible. And with my table, an 18" wide runner would also look/work better, so I'll work that into my next design. ;^)

I'm wondering, for those who use/like table runners, whether you prefer a rounded end, squared end, or pointed end? Does any one shape work better for any reason? Since my runners will have to suit both table-lengths, I won't put tassles or weights on the ends of them.

Do you all like table runners, in general? I'm thinking about making some for my sister as an xmas gift. :)
