Backsplash Advice

New construction. Netuno Bordeaux granite with chiseled edges just installed and deciding on backsplash. Cannot decide between a simple Crema Marfil subway tile and let granite be the star or go with a stacked ledgestone in a creamy color to more closely mimic the live edge of the granite and the 22 ft floor to ceiling stacked stone fireplace in the great room. House is mountain style with very open floorplan and will have a rustic luxe vibe.

Thoughts? Have been given pros and cons of both by kitchen designer.

Cabinet placement is fine. There is no door going in next to it. Stone splash is staying on the island wall because no backsplash going in there and it will be paint only between upper and lower there.

Wood cabinets like yours (and mine) have movement due to knots, grain and varying color tones. The countertops also have movement. I would do a calm backsplash to give the eye a place to rest and prevent the area from becoming too busy. I went with cream subway tile, but mine is not a mountain home so i can see where you might prefer the stone.

If you like blue, you might try using a blue gray finish on your island cabinets only? It seems like so many try to attain a finished kitchen that reminds one of the old sienna color photographs. No one really wants to live in shades of brown and gray all over the world. That can be monotonous. I really like the backsplash slocoja shared in her photo. I bit of shiney is really pretty with the silver chrome appliances, but maybe limit it to one or 2 lines thru the center of your backsplash, and than use the choice for your countertops in the backsplash. I think you might enjoy that more long term. Especially since you have so many different heights of window frames, cabinet trim, lines of molded cabinet doors and vertical lines in your windows... Do a couple of lines of your silver, or even a dusty blue or blue gray even if you can find it(goes with any other color you can think of for the next 3 decades, like blue jeans do? LOL) if you like that amongst the backsplash which matches your counter top, and let your island be the color you have planned in your picture if so... That way your eyes won't tire of all the movement in the kitchen, so many angles on your backsplash, the reflection etc.. I would do it at the height that splits your outlets in half, one to 3 lines of horizontal mini tiles. Very pretty!!

We had a beadboard backsplash in our last kitchen. I found the cleaning of the little ridges and the grooves (!!), especially behind the sink, to be tedious beyond belief. A 6" soapstone backsplash would be my vote, followed by tile to the counter. If you search English kitchens, many still use the small backsplash formed from the counter material and may provide you with more visuals for your decision. Good luck!

Nothing with veins or pattern, since your counter has a great deal of movement. I'd look for something in a simple shape, either subway or square, in a pale color. Maybe a bit of crackle or speckle if you don't want a flat/solid color, but I'd definitely not do anything marble or marble look. Colors are tough on monitors, but maybe a pale mushroom would work (or that might be too similar to what you have?) or a soft sage? Hard to tell on my monitor. Get some samples and view them with your counters and cabinets in different lights. Also, if your light bulbs are warm, that will make everything look more yellow. Sage example: mushroom:

Not sure what it was supposed to look like, but it looks lovely to me. Agreed that I might have chosen a different grout color, but I assume (?) that decision was yours or a designer's and not the contractor's. It is hard to cut small tile pieces in general, glass or otherwise, but the only issues I see here have to do with spacing and alignment (and what looks like grout where the tile meets the counter, where it should be caulked), which probably are more about the tile than the cuts.

I agree I would go with the less busy tile. An area to break the granite and cabinets, add calm. All in all it all looks great, but you dont want to take away from the beauty you have going on by over doing it. The granite is nice and the cabinets are gorgeous I think. I really like the simple back splash.

Too many clowns in the circus ring already. You need a plain cream tile for the splash, with matching grout. And they need to remove that stone splash that they tacked on there.

Check your cabinet placement. That little one here by itself looks like it will have clearance problems with the door once the hood is installed.

I am really leaning toward the honed crema marfil subway. The color is perfect and it will let the knotty alder cabinets and granite be the focal point.

Avoid doing sstone with stone. You need two dissimilar materials.

I disagree with the statement that stone shouldn't be used with stone. Tumbled stone happens to be a great accompaniment to granite and/or solid quartz countertops. Do a Houzz search for tumbled stone backsplashes and you will see it used with granite almost all the time. The "soft" edges of a tumbled stone give it a classic, time-worn look that won't go out of style.Tumbled stone also fits well with a rustic style home.

If you like the clean edge of the Crema Marfil tile that will give you a classic, traditional look. I used Emperador Light for my backsplash and had 12x12's cut in half and had it installed in a staggered (offset/brick joint) pattern. I love how clean the look it and it's a lovely backdrop for my kitchen space.

Lastly, you can leave the granite splash that meets with the peninsula, bar top. But, I would not use a granite splash in the remainder of the kitchen as it will interrupt the flow and vertical space between counters and upper cabinets.

I agree you can use stone with stone. Our current house has Tropic Brown granite with a beautiful tumbled travertine backsplash. My thought was that since the Netuno granite has more movement than my current granite I would let it speak for itself. I just haven't found a tumbled travertine in the right colorway and the honed marfil is a good contrast rather than being highly polished.

I purposely picked this granite - DH and I both love it and it works with our design scheme. The Master Bath and shower are quartz to mimic marble and is the calm area.

Also plan on using the staggered subway tile pattern and the short granite splash is only on that one wall on the island.
