A sad day for my family

My mom called me today with some sad news. My younger brother and his ex have two kids together that are 10 and 2. My brother and Rachel split over a year ago and she has suffered from EDS for several years (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome) and she passed away this morning. She was found in a bathroom. My mom is with my brother now and they are getting things moved around for the kids to come and live with him. We were suppose to have a family Christmas tomorrow, but I went ahead and cancelled it. She was only 37 years old...so, so sad.

SO glad to hear they made it through the heat!!! Every last one of them is precious! They have a hard time just fledging young ones and even then, it's said that only 50% that fledge survive to their 1st season of nesting. Whoever said they are tougher than we think, is indeed right! My bluebirds and tree swallow nestlings (3 each) have had to sit in nest boxes in full sun through this heat wave! Although most of my boxes are lighter colored and I used heat shields on the roof. According to Sialis, the young are as sensitive to cold/heat as the eggs from day 6 - 9. After this they can better handle the temps but heat shielding would really help their cause. Pay attention, if they are breathing heavily and fast, and are "panting" (keeping their beaks open)...this is when you should act to cool them down! -Tim-

Sad day - Found a dead hawk in my back yard..

Not pleasant. Found one in my yard a while ago. Looked like it had been hit by a grenade. Some deaths are caused by other species of hawks wiping out the competition. I can take that better than I can the notorious cats.

Thank you everybody for your kind thoughts. We got thru the 17th, and then Father's Day. Brycesmommy, you've been so in my thoughts and prayers. Your burden is great, too, and this time of year is especially difficult for you also. The past 2 years, we seem to be especially vulnerable starting with Mother's Day, then Millie's birthday, the anniversary of their deaths and then Father's Day. I do appreciate your kind words and the friends who called us just to say they know how terrible that day was. Somehow or another, we seem to be able to get things together later in summer, and then we function OK until Dave's birthday in October, remembering the glorious day on which he was born, and reviewing his life and how much we loved him. As I may have mentioned, Dave was a fine, fine baseball player in high school and college; he played until his early thirties, and then work and family left him with no time for baseball. He loved the game, and so did all of us. Last year, on June 17th, we visited his high school and walked to the baseball field. It was completely empty, school being out for the summer. On the bench in the home dugout was a single baseball. I think he left it there for us. This year on the 17th, I was walking my only other grandchild (she's 2) home, and there in the midst of a baseball field, newly dragged and devoid of footprints was a baseball! I think (and pray) that he's telling us that he and Millie are fine, but how terribly we miss them. Bless you all who are carrying such terrible burdens. You're in my prayers.

Wow, I'm really sorry that you had to deal with that. It sounds like you definitely need to move on to the "tough love" part of parenting with her. And I totally agree with Dana about what to say to her comment about the jewelry. If she had asked and not stolen it, it would be a completely different story (not that you would have said yes, but it would have shown respect for you.) I also agree with how to handle the younger ones....they do need to understand that this is unacceptable....and that it is about what she did, not what they did! This reinforces why I have taken a hard line with my 20 y/o SD -- who stole from me last summer (over and over!). I will not allow her in my house alone because she has shown that she cannot be trusted. Yours has too and you need to show her that these are the consequences for her behavior (don't know about yours, but my SD never had any consequences for her behavior.....her mother either accepted the obvious lies from her daughter, lied to us about it, or made it excuses for her. Like you, we have another younger child watching all of this and this is an important lesson for them too -- we cannot and will not tolerate disrespect, lying, stealing, etc.....and there will be consequences for breaking the rules (not just house rules, but the rules you need to live by in our society in order to be successful and have some integrity!). I'm so sorry. It's horrible to lose a parent so young.

Please tell your brother to have his kids tested for the disease or similar connective tissue syndrome that can kill with a similar mechanism such as an aneurysm.

How tragic for the children. The Two won't remember her. The Ten will find his memories slipping away. I hope their father can quickly adjust to being full time single parent -- of two sad and confused kids.

Thank you everyone...it's still kind of a bad dream because we were hoping to see the kids and even Rachel this weekend to get the kids their presents.
