I love buffalo plaid for a casual or rustic setting. Altho it seems to be very popular right now, I think of it as a classic. If it works with your decor, go for it!

I love Buffalo check but probably would not pick a pattern with two dark colors - just a personal preference. If you aren't sure about making a big investment in the pattern, start with a few pillows or a throw.

I have a coastal home and it's a bit of cottage thrown in too. I have Country Curtains sage green buffalo check panels in my DR. I also ordered addtl fabric and made pillows as the LR is visible from DR. Love them.

I love it all. I'll admit I find it almost annoying that it's considered trendy at the moment. It's a classic. I've also considered the black and red to be for more of a rustic cabin type setting.

Funny, I just got a sample of black and cream buffalo check from Country Curtains for a valance in my kitchen. If it's trendy, I didn't realize it. Or perhaps marketing has seeped into my consciousness without realizing it. I like cheery kitchens, and nothing says cheery like yellow and white check. Given that I'd have to order cafe curtains and then shorten them, I may make my own as I did for what I have now. Even I can sew a valance.

You're doing better than I am in the sewing department. I've been known to pin on buttons when they come off.

I think it would be lovely in your home, and accomplish exactly what you're hoping for, to warm and brighten things during these cold Winter months. Especially in the black and red. What a great idea! Please share photos with us if you do.

I got the Country Curtains black buffalo check valances. I needed to shorten them a bit, but totally within my skill set. They're cute and the fabric is really nice.

Never heard of"buffalo check" before - though I've seen the pattern. How did it get that name?

Ralph Lauren Home has a gorgeous blue and cream buffalo check on Macys.com. I just love it, and while rustic, it's softer somehow while still delivering that fabulous checkerboard look.
