New Construction, Feedback and Thoughts on Layout
Comments (1)Sorry, but that is WAY too pale too see to Comment on. Try darkening the lines, or retracing in black ink/marker....See MoreCompletely New Direction with Layout- Thoughts?
Comments (23)DW & Trash Pullout in main kitchen...You did say the DW would be to the left of the sink & the trash pullout to the right...correct? (Just checking since the latest pic has it reversed.) Sink in bottom left corner of island...I think it would work better if it were in the bottom right corner so it's accessible from the range & prep area b/w wall & range. It would also free up the bottom left corner for landing space for the refrigerator. It would also reduce splashing of the person sitting on that last seat! Since the trash will be under the sink it will also put the trash where it's needed...near the prep zones (island and b/w range & wall) and the cooking zone. (BTW...I like the zone separation and locations...cleaning away from the eating areas and prep & cooking zones near the pantry & refrigerator.) Pantry...Do you really want a window in your pantry? If you get any sun on that side it would be heat up the pantry. Also, anyone could see into your pantry from outside...messy, but more importantly if you keep anything someone might want to steal (expensive small appliances, etc....you did eliminate your appliance garage) you're advertising it... If you put a window covering over it to keep out the sun or nosy people, then I'm not sure what the point of the window would be. If you eliminate the window you could hang a broom, dustpan, mop, swifter, etc. on that wall. Closet...Consider putting in some shelves with or without baskets/bins or drawers + shelves in one corner for hats, gloves, etc. Upper cabs...If you don't need the storage, I like the idea of all those windows instead...except as a BS behind the range! With a good view they would be wonderful! (Not sure if you meant windows behind the range, it doesn't look like it but since it was mentioned I thought I'd weigh in on it.) You might consider putting glass-doored uppers in the BP but no uppers in the main kitchen (you may already be planning that...I tried to review all the posts but ended up skimming!) I think the glass doors would look nice in the BP. BTW...I'm glad to see you got your walk-in pantry!...See MoreKitchen Layout for my new house - All thoughts welcome
Comments (1)Well, if it helps, we are a family of four (children 13 and 15) with a 36" builtin and it is more than enough space. We don't keep any beer and sodas though (red wine needs no frig and I encourage the kids to drive water :). Because it is shallower and so bright and open we no longer have the problem of "losing" things in the back. (Just the problem of husband looking at something and saying "this should be thrown out" and then leaving it there)....See MoreLayout thoughts *please*
Comments (9)If that door wasn't in the kitchen there would be more room for the cooktop & sink on the back wall. So, how long is that wall? It would be nice if we could see all the dimensions of the space as well as your KD's design (doors/walls/windows & distances b/w each). The window doesn't look 5' in your current kitchen, so I'm assuming you're going to make it bigger...can it be moved as well? If it can, then you could move it and the sink to the right to make room for the cooktop & hood. As I'm sure you've noticed, corner ranges take up a lot of room...at least 4' on each wall. So, right now you have a refrigerator & range crammed into that one wall with very little room b/w them b/c of the angled range. Then, as others have said, put the oven cabinet next to the refrigerator. Idea 2: Move the door to the other side of the short wall, leave the range & sink where they are, and put the oven cabinet there. Idea 3: Move the door to the other side of the short wall and leave the range & sink where they are. Next, put the oven cabinet where the refrigerator is now & move the refrigerator to where the door is now. On the left wall, you gain about 6" of space and if you also take that wall down, you gain another 4-1/2" for a total of 10" or so gained. That means you'll have 10" + whatever you have now (12"?) b/w the range & the ovens. It will open that space up a bit. You will lose about 5" - 6" on the sink wall w/the refrigerator there... .....36" ref + two 3/4" end panels to frame it = 37-1/2" = 3'1-1/2"; then .....3'1-1/2" - 2'8" = 5-1/2" needed from the sink run.) I think I like #3 best b/c it doesn't disrupt the nice setup for the sink, opens up the left wall somewhat, and leaves the corner range. While corner ranges do take up a lot of room, I do like the look if it's done well (see SharB's kitchen in the Finished Kitchens Blog (FKB) for an example of one done well.)...See MoreMacswim
