How does one prune recidivist variegated episcias (e.g. ember lace)?

A small E. Ember Lace has only one leaf with pink out of 10 leaves. I have read that one needs to remove parts of the plant that revert to all green or they will take over, but I see that many online photos of this clone have an all green leaf. I can't remove 9 out of 10 leaves. How does this work? Can leaves on the same stem have different genes?

Could the leaf color be due to temperature or light intensity rather than genes? Should I only remove whole branches without any pink?
