New home came with rose bush
Comments (3)Well, this is all going to be an educated guess, since we don't know exactly what rose it is. But, since it's growing up a trellis my guess would be that it's a climber, and you don't need to prune climbers much in the spring. I prune climbers by just shortening the secondary canes to a few inches. The primary canes are the biggest longest ones that form what you could call main branches, and the secondaries are the smaller canes that grow off of those. The secondaries are the ones that flower, and are the ones you trim. You don't trim the primaries except when they're getting too big for the space. All roses are fertilized later in spring, when they have a few inches of new growth on them. If you are going to spray with fungicides, you start as soon as the leaves first come out....See MoreNeed advice about moving a rose bush.....
Comments (7)How large are the minis now? What I usually do is use a 1 gallon, smaller if the rose is small. I will then repot later when it starts growing in. I've found that using too big of a pot hurt me more then using one a size up from the root ball. I did a test one year after getting minis in the mail. I took them out of the pot it was sent in, then used a "rose pot" (what roses from garden centers come in 3-5 gallon) along with a few different sized smaller ones. The smaller pots did better then the larger. When I transplant, I trim it up but not too much. I will then watch the rose to see how it does and how many canes die. Some I'm able to not have to prune at all, while others go into shock more. I just dug up about 150 roses, fall of 2006, then more in spring & summer of 2007. Just about all of them survived. I'm in the process of planting them in the ground at the new house....See MoreMy Rose Bush...happy in her new home. (pic)
Comments (6)Hi york, Yes, I can see that water is an issue. If I don't get out there at least every other day to water, she starts to look sad. I am holding my breath today...the guys doing the re-shingle job on the house are working right next to her...as I type. She has grown well these 5 weeks, I would hate to see her sustain and damage. Thanks for all your help, york. I tried to do just as you advised during the move and I think it worked! sooey...See MoreHome Run Rose Bush Question
