My Rose Bush...happy in her new home. (pic)

Hi Kids,

Well, after that long, nerve-racking...'can I do it or can't I' post about moving my beloved rose bush from our home in CT to our home on the Cape, I thought I better post a follow up.

TA-DAAAA....SHE LIVES!

I read and re-read all of your advice and dirctions. And, just as was stated, she came out of the ground a 'natural bare root'. We put her directly into a big plastic tub with enough dirt and water to keep her happy. On moving day, the 31st, my husband put the tub in the back of his pickup and off she went... Once we arrived back up on the Cape we were both exausted and in need a few slower days, so she was not replanted until Tuesday the 5th.

We were a little nervous about how she would take to her new surroundings, but as you can see, she already has new growth and seems to be happy. Since this picture was taken she has put out more new growth and even more leaves. So, thank you one and all! I appreciate all your help and guidance in this project. I think she is going to make it!

Congratulations Sooey! Isn't it lovely to find out you can safely move a favorite plant?

And congratulations on moving yourselves from the old house - may you get all the boxes unpacked before the rose blooms...

It's a vast improvement over the shrub-engulfed house we first saw, merely by being cleaned up. One thing that jumps out to me as not enough, is the groundcover, which are few and far apart. The goal is usually to get groundcover to grow into a solid mass for the best look and so as not to need top dressing with mulch anymore and still have weed suppression. But I imagine you'll be doing some tweaking over the next year. As far as watering, it's hard for someone, by remote, to tell you if you've watered long enough. There are a lot of variables in how you might be doing it and with what equipment. If in doubt, dig down and see. It won't take you long to discover the right timing formula.

Very interesting. It's great that you have those fences. I'm assuming roses in your zone generally don't become monsters, so that's a point in your favor. And you can grow some smaller ones in big pots on the deck. You're doing a lot of vertical growing. But do at least allow the recommended spacing. It will save having to dig them up and move them next year. Here's what happens when plants grow. 4/14/07: 9 rose bushes planted 5' on center (too close in Florida) and probably as many perennials in a 30' long triangular bed 6/26/07: Growing nicely. 4/4/08: Some roses shifted, one needs to come out, no perennials left except a couple of new daisies, and I think I'm in for some heavy trimming in the future to keep these from encroaching on each other. They're touching now after only a year. At least, being a guy, your back is better built for digging the same hole 2 or 3 times. Mine isn't. It's getting tired. Try to do it right the first time. I really like the round bed also. You did a fantastic job and it already looks great. I have seen those fancy edgers at home depot that you used but you must be more ambitious than I am because I figgured they would be lots of work to get done. Plus those things weigh a ton LOL! All the daylilies look great but I like APACHE WAR DANCE the very best.

Hi Christine, Right after I posted that message, I had to go out of town on a family emergency. Sadly, when I got back a couple of weeks later, my poor rose had dropped all its leaves. Right now it looks about the same as it did when I first dug it up. I feel terrible about it. I don't think it's completely dead, because if you break off some of the branches, the inside wood still looks a little green. But it sure doesn't look very well. If your friend still wants to take a chance on it, I would be happy to deliver it wherever, and also throw in a bag of Slow-Release Miracle-Gro that I can't use anymore since I moved to the condo. If you want to pick it up, I live in Bethesda; is that anywhere near you?

Yes, I am happy that the operation was a success. Now, if she can survive the men who are here to re-shingle the front of the house, all will be well.

Now, unpacking all those boxes is another story...

When all is said and done, the blessing and the curse of roses is that they are truly briars. We think of them as much more than that because of the flowers that captivate us so, but nonetheless......

(And as anyone who has ever tried to tame a briar patch knows..............)

Just make sure it stays adequately watered.

Hi york,

Yes, I can see that water is an issue. If I don't get out there at least every other day to water, she starts to look sad. I am holding my breath today...the guys doing the re-shingle job on the house are working right next to her...as I type. She has grown well these 5 weeks, I would hate to see her sustain and damage.
