Noise when the heat turns off

Thought I post here too... I already posted this at the Heat and Airconditioning forum.

I have a new heater (central), and all new duct work, and new return air openings/grills in the ceiling.

Every time the heat turns off, there was noise. I thought, it was the filter falling on the grill.

Friday I garnered some wine corks at a party, and today I used them.
I sliced them up, and put them between the grill and the filter, and
hooked the grill back up.

Voila, no more noise.

Thought I share here, as maybe someone else had such a noise problem.

However you slip the cork pieces in, be careful they're secured to something (glue or otherwise) so as not to fall or be able to be sucked in to the fan.

Elmer, they are under the filter... I mean, the filter is between the cork slices and the return duct. There is no movement of the filter now. I will however clue them on, after I buy some... another thing left behind when I left Florida and I only now realized it. ;)

Shekveva Adams - its just the metal expanding and contracting. It expands when heated and contracts when it cools and that is the sound you are hearing after you shut the oven off. I think in my Bluestar gas range/oven I hear it a loud boom about 15 minutes after I shut the oven off. I dont think you need to call anyone unless you want to pay them $100/hour to tell you that its thermodynamics.

My fan motor recently had an internal short to ground. The symptoms were the fan ran continuously at 1/2 spd and when the thermostat called for heat the motor would start to buzz, but no increase in airflow. I ordered an entire fan assembly w/ motor for under $400, I couldn't get the motor shaft out of the fan assembly without destroying the entire thing. Prior to replacing the fan assembly, I changed out the fan relay to no avail.

Air in the pipes may need to be bled? Air keeps the heat from radiating, so your system may not necessarily be off.

Is this because it's an open burner? DH wants the 30" Bluestar Platinum range in our next home so I've been checking all the GW threads on Bluestar. My Dacor rangetop (natural gas) doesn't do that. And the GE propane cooktop at my vacation home doesn't do it either. These are both sealed burners.

That's the normal place, between the return duct and the fan.

Are the cork pieces on the fan side of the filter (and so could get in) , or on the return duct side (and so the filter blocks the way)? That was my concern. Sounds like you're on top of things. Good luck.

They are on the return duct side, so the filter blocks the way!!! Thanks for looking out for me. :)

In the future, I wonder if you could use those thingies that go on chair legs to protect the floor? They have 'stickum' on them.

I need to do that. My air filter clunks when the system shuts off.

I like having some weather stripping scraps on hand with an adhesive side for such problems.

chisue, to use all the technical terms, Thingies are a sandwich of three materials - there's a piece of Padded Stuff, then they put Fuzzy on one side and last they put Stickum on the other side.

My Thingies only appear to have two layers, so are open-faced sandwiches. Very compressed felt plus the stickum. No fuzzy.

Anyway, OklaMoni, you are a smart person. I've heard furnaces make that little thunk, and I bet they had the same problem.
