Should I get the Shingles Shot?
Comments (45)In July of 2010 husband and I had the shingles vacine. This past September 2013 my husband broke out with the shingles on the right side of his face from about the eye down to the chin. Very uncomfortable he was. They did not get in his eye, but he had a terrible right ear. They cleared up in about 3 weeks, but he still had a lingering pain around the ear and inside the mouth. By Christmas the annoying pain had left. Some shingle cases are plagued with pain afterwards for months or into years. I personally believe having the vaccine cut down on the effects of the shingles and his was a milder case even though he was in plenty of pain for a while. I did worry about the ear it looked so bad down in the ear channel. Swelled bad. Yes I think the vaccine did help and I would recommend the vaccine to anyone. I have seen some full blown cases in the nursing home residents. It is not pleasant and they suffer so.....Shirl...See MoreI'll write about the shingles shot
Comments (25)My DH got shingles the end of Oct. 2011. He was gone when he noticed the blisters(on a Tues)and thought he got burned from the shower. He got home on Sat. and I looked at them and told him he better get to the Dr. first thing Mon. AM. Then on second thought I said he better get to the emergency room yet that day. He didn't argue. Making a long story short, the ER Dr. put him on 4000mg.(no, that is not a mistake)a day of anti-viral meds and told him to go see his regular Dr. on Tues. The regular Dr. told him, he could be a billboard for shingles, that it was the worse case(other than someone having them in their eye)that he had ever seen in all his years of praticing. Today, he still is having problems with his shirts rubbing on his skin. He was out of work for 7 weeks and even to this day, I think he is working in spite of the fact he is still in pain. Shot or no shot, get to the Dr. if you notice blisters anywhere on your body, with no explanation as to why....See MoreI got my shots today
Comments (7)whooping cough has made a huge comeback and this is a lesson for everyone on how herd protection actually does work! if only 2% of the population doesn't vaccinate then we are all generally protected from mass outbreaks but when vaccine rates drop much under 90% holes start popping up as outbreaks. so far 55,000 cases of whooping cough have come up this yr, numbers the CDC reported not seen since the 50's :-0 i got it in early june when on vacation and it had to run it's course for 2 months of coughing sooo hard you are neary throwing up plus the gasping for air like you are having an asthma attack is fun too lol. took my co-worker weeks to adjust to the fact i wasn't having a bad asthma attack :-( even thou i have extensive microbiology knowledge i did not know i needed a booster for whooping cough every 10 yrs, usually given combo w/ tetanus. my dh got a slight case but overcame it after a month then got the booster. i often get a flu shot, had not thought about it for this yr yet. i sat out last yrs H1N1, letting my non-scientific DH talk me out of it when normally i don't listen to opinions w/o credentials lol. i think after reading the responses thou i will get the shot this yr and make my DH too. we are travelling w/ my 5 yr old niece & nephew for both thanksgiving and christmas. my nephew has lung problems left from being a premie and i'd hate to make him sick plus we got sick from them (started as bronchitus) while on vacation w/ them in june LOL... come to think of it, we will definitely got shots! ~ liz...See Moreshingles shot
Comments (20)Everyone has different health and financial circumstances, and from the comments above I understand that some medical conditions may prevent it. The pain and suffering of this condition that some endure can't be overstated. If you have no medical coverage and the cost needs to fit into your budget, save up and make it your Christmas present to your significant other or to yourself. I can't imagine that something else would be a more worthwhile gift. Eccentric, people I know who have suffered from shingles would say that irrespective of cost and irrespective of having only a 50% probability of effectiveness, you should today run (not walk) to the nearest place available and get the injection. Assuming your health condition permits. I got the injection a few years ago and it was completely uneventful. My father suffered from recurring shingles flareups, and several close friends have had it. It can be excruciatingly painful and debilitating, it's something I hope to never experience....See Moremaddielee
