shingles vaccine
Comments (18)morz8-"Could you have a reaction? Maybe, a very few do, my own sister developed a 2-day headache, rash (fine not chicken pox or shingles-like, red, all over body) about a week after hers that she suspects but doesn't know for sure was tied to the shot. Not convenient but certainly not the crisis a full blown case of shingles would be." A 2-day headache, rash all over the body? No thanks. I'm agree with EmmaR and D0ug. Why risk contracting an illness from a shot when you might never get it otherwise? There are other things that bother me about this vaccine. Here is what the insert says (Merck): WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS 5.1 Hypersensitivity Reactions Serious adverse reactions, including anaphylaxis, have occurred with ZOSTAVAX. Adequate treatment provisions, including epinephrine injection (1:1,000), should be available for immediate use should an anaphylactic/anaphylactoid reaction occur. 5.2 TRANSMISSION OF VACCINE VIRUS. Transmission of vaccine virus may occur between vaccinees and susceptible contacts. 5.3 Concurrent Illness Deferral should be considered in acute illness (for example, in the presence of fever) or in patients with active untreated tuberculosis. 5.4 Limitations of Vaccine Effectiveness Vaccination with ZOSTAVAX does not result in protection of all vaccine recipients. The duration of protection beyond 4 years after vaccination with ZOSTAVAX is unknown. The need for revaccination has not been defined." Hardly worth risking my otherwise good health for. Comments (12)In NC, if an unvaccinated dog or cat is bitten by any wild animal who may have rabies, the local health department is legally required to kill the pet and test it for rabies. If you had a current rabies titer you *might* be able to convince the health department to allow the alternative 6 month quarantine at the shelter. To get a rabies titer, you will need to have your vet send blood to Kansas State University rabies testing lab, and it takes 3 weeks to get results. Because it takes so long to get results, you cannot get a rabies titer after the pet is bit- the health department would have sent his head to the lab already. Local laws vary greatly as cindyxeus mentioned and it is up to each person to find out what the laws are in their state and municipality. I know that nobody would allow their pet to play with wild animals or strays. However wild animals and strays do whatever the heck they want, especially rabid ones, and have been known to come inside homes all sorts of ways, especially bats. I've seen it too many times to take that chance myself. We don't have a waiver here in NC. I generally encourage people to get their dogs and cats vaccinated, and will pre-treat with steroids and diphenhydramine if needed. I rarely vaccinate for Lepto depending on individual risk (and if done, that vaccine only lasts 6-12 months at best), and distemper/parvo vaccines last a long time so that doesn't need to be done often either (duration of immunity studies show 7+ years). If the reaction is bad, then I give the owner an INFORMED choice- what happens if their pet is bit, etc. It's up to the owner in the end, as long as they have all the information....See MoreFor those still thinking about the shingles vaccine
Comments (19)I can't wrap my head around this--I admit. Shingles is caused by the chicken pox virus we have in our bodies, left over from when we were kids and had the disease (whether we knew it or not--DB had shingles this year and none of us remember him ever having CP)--so how is giving a dose of the LIVE vaccine going to PREVENT shingles? Logically, that seems to me to up your chances of developing the disease. The information on this is, to my mind, woefully inadequate--they really don't know if one dose will do, or if a booster will be needed down the road. You know what that sounds like? That longterm tests haven't been done yet. That's scary. And the contradictions--everything I'm reading says not to take if it you're on steroids, yet one person above was told to get it because she's on steroids? I know steroids are an issue, because that was how my brother got shingles--he was taking steroids for something else, and they lowered his immune system. Look, everyone has to do their own research, make up their own mind--with the input of their medical support team. But I'm not sold on this yet. I do think trying to prevent or lesson the effects of shingles is important. I'm just not certain this vaccine has been adequately tested yet, nor do I understand how it could possibly work. I'll hold off until I'm certain of the safety and efficacy of this one....See MoreShingles Vaccine
Comments (33)Stress brought on the one case of shingles I had, and both my DH and I have since had the vaccine. (Zero reactions.) Our secondary insurance (after Medicare) paid for ours, but we would have happily paid $200 each for a 50/50 chance of preventing shingles or having less severe cases. If you had chickenpox and now have any rash you remotely think could be shingles, get it examined. I discovered what I thought were 'spider bites' on my right forehead one morning. DH had had a severe reaction once to a bite and needed antibiotics for it, so I went to see my doctor. It was shingles. Caught early (within 72 hours), you can be given an anti-herpes medication to lessen the severity of the shingles. I had a very mild case, and I credit getting the anti-herpes meds with that. I was sent to have my eye examined, but it had not become involved. I was also cautioned not to be in contact with babies or pregnant women until the rash was gone, as they could 'catch' chicken pox from me. A clue to diagnosing your rash is that shingles usually stops at a mid-point on your body. Only the right quadrant of my head was involved. You may only see an outbreak around your side and right up to your spine on your back, or right up to the middle of your body in front. Be suspicious, and be seen!...See Moregolddust
