Garlic cloves forming above ground?
Comments (9)Stem cloves are a common occurrence in "soft neck" garlic varieties, in response to less-than-ideal growing conditions. Because of this, the presence of stem cloves usually signals a smaller than normal bulb. Stem cloves were widespread in my Artichoke garlic varieties during very wet years... garlic does not like waterlogged soil. A raised bed can improve soil conditions & reduce the likelihood of stem cloves. With a raised bed, I had only one plant out of 150 form stem cloves this year. If you get stem cloves, they are worth planting, since that may be a way of shedding diseases & organisms which can accumulate in the ground bulbs & be passed on....See MoreGarlic: 2 huge cloves per bulb. Comments (2)chloe, How did you raise these? Soil amendments? Personally, I would enjoy for mine to be this size with only two cloves! These would be super for roasting as well. I am one of those folks who tries to avoid al foil and roast peeled garlic in a covered heavy clay pot with a bit of bacon fat/lard/oliveoil/butter. Think of time saved...and less stress on the finger joints... On the other hand, if you sell garlic and folks only want a 'taste' of garlic in a dish, someone here may have had a similar crop behavior or explanation. OR, advertise your garlic at the market as timesaver garlic...cut a few open for proof. Call it 'gourmet's delight!' Good luck! Please report back on how well these 'two cloves only' store compared to the multicloved crop. So far, with our variable weather, my garlic varieties have been similar to earlier years, despite the heavy clay former tobacco farm soil....See MoreRECIPE: Roasted Whole Garlic Cloves
Comments (2)What's the problem? Sounds perfect to me. Are the cloves too brown? in which case cover them while they roast. I've had bread like that....somehow never thought to make it myself!! Yummy yummy!! Linda C...See Morewhat happens to the original garlic clove?
Comments (9)Normally old clove rots away, giving place for first that "scallion type" thing, that later starts dividing in the new cloves. As soon as the pant developed new roots, it looks normal to me. The old clove gave its energy and nutrients to provide roots and initial greens. Now the plant will feed itself from roots. I usually eat the green garlic like that - just clean the rest of old clove, wash it and add to your salad. The yellowing of the leaves it is different story - could be frost damage in winter, sun burn - nothing to worry here. Or it could be sign of fungus as well. Difficult to say without picture....See MoreUser
