wash machine water
Comments (1)Soapy water is not a problem with most plants (citrus is an exception). Read the label of the detergent you use and watch for heavy metals. Remember that soapy water is used as a green form of insect control (aphids). If possible I would move the watering spot around so you are not dumping soapy water over and over in the same spot. You don't want to dump hot water straight into the garden so when washing whites you would switch to the sewage system or have a catch barrel that would slow down the water long enough to allow for cooling. You don't need to change out the hose if install a divertor in the drain line. Then its just a matter of turning a knob. Easy thing to install if you have pvc drain lines ... cast iron is much more of a pain and likely not worth the effort of installing a divertor. If you have cast iron you will need to move that washer drain hose after all ;o) Mike...See MoreGray water reuse (Washing machine source)
Comments (6)g'day toby, many local gov's have laws that simply don't reflect common sense, so the best thing is use your grey water by all means but don't tell anyone "what the eye don't see the heart won't yearn for". there is no documented hard case evidence to support any claims of any health issues. anyhow having said all that we re-use all of our water, the target to use water at least twice and more if we can. makes good water management sense in these drought times or anytime for that matter. we have buckets in the shower to trap as much water as is possible, and we also use grey water to flush the solids in the toilet, wee doesn't get flushed. we use a homemade laundry gel come hand cleaner and general purpose cleaner, recipe on our site. can be used as dish detergent if you don't mind no suds. we use a 15 litre plastic basin in the sink so we can take that water to the garden as well. don't store the grey water for any period of time use it as fresh as it comes, and probaly best to run it direct from the machine to the gardens using a hose of similar diameter to the machine hose, use of drippers may mean lots of clogging. you could incorporate a simple screen filter to filter as much of the hair and lint if you wish but hardly worth the bother. len Here is a link that might be useful: len's garden page...See Morewashing machine water hose vibrates
Comments (5)Hoses don't vibrate and thump without impulses acting upon from some source. Don't know anything about this particular machine but your description sounds to me like fill solenoid fluttering upon activation, probably associated with ATC control. Those fluctuations would immediately transfer to hose (the wiggle) and can be transmitted elsewhere. If that's what's going on, replacement relatively simple/cheap. For purposes of enquiry call, might just suggest that's it and consider cost based on what told for price of the part. If that's what's happening, it probably also explains the lack of hot water issue although latest model ATC controls are all over the map as far as what they deliver for "hot", "warm", or "cold". That's the entire industry's dirty little secret these days. If you like the machine otherwise, would advise repair if cost reasonable. If you'd like a seriously hot wash sometime, you'll probably need a different machine with a built-in heater....See MoreTo Machine Wash or Not To Machine Wash...that is the question
Comments (18)I hate to tell you this, but washing is no guarantee that fabrics won't bleed later. I have no idea why, but even fabric from the same bolt might act differently. Just yesterday, I had a small scrap of RJR panel print to make a label for a quilt. Spritzed it a bit first with cold water to press first, and very soon, the reds ran. All the fabrics were rinsed in cold water before I used them, and nothing ran. So, I got another idential scrap, and rinsed it in cold water first, to check. No running. Huh? So I got another and spritzed it. No running. It was all from the same bolt. Hmmmm. I guess I will just use one that didn't run. Go figure. I'm left to wonder what will happen if the quilt itself ever gets washed. It would not be the first time I've had this happen. BlueBars...See Morepoppy214
