Left unattended your furnace could possibly put new meaning to the big bang theory. Oil fired furnaces are not something a novice should even attempt to play with. Ever seen an oil furnace explode ? It's pretty impressive what that little box can do. If the oil line ruptures during the explosion it gets even more exciting. call someone in. I've had an oil burner licence for 20 years and thought i saw it all untill i saw someone had connected their oil tank to the furnace with a garden hose. Yes the tank was in the basement.

We replace fewer ignitors than outfits with a customer base a fraction the size of ours. We have a lot of parts-replacers and parts-replacing-troubleshooters in my region that return, toss or inventory "working" ignitors, transformers, oil pumps and primary controls. Years ago there was a big debate about whether or not to use ignitors on older oil burners with intermittent ignition (continuous duty). Some people believed that transformers would last longer on these units. I like high voltage ignitors, interrupted ignition, oil solenoid valves, pre-purge/post-purge etc. Keeps the porcelains and electrodes looking brand spanking new.

replace the nozzle with a .85 or .75gph x 70A Make ABSOLUTELY sure the retention head isn't burned off (look down the blast tube) you'll need a "F-3" head if it is, if it's carboned up clean it. Replace the electrodes with a standard kit ( cut to length) and use the provided tool to gap them PERFECTLY. Oil furnaces/boilers are simple, reliable pieces of equipment that is inexpensive to service yourself; they do require some knowledge or aptitude however. If you plan on servicing this unit yourself, you'll need to know how to tune it properly, and clean the furnace/boiler throughly. Do lots of reading and learning if you plan on doing this yourself. If you don't have the necessary experience, you probably should call a tech to adjust your air, fuel pressure etc. w/ a bach kit. You should also have a filter in your oil line JUST before the burner (even if you have one at the tank, if not, install one just before the burner); these filters also need to be changed yearly.
