She loves make-up too but I don't know if that is something I could pick out for her.

One of my nieces (20 yo) has asked for a couple of makeup brushes and Urban Decay's "Chill" (a makeup setter, I believe). I didn't invest in GOOD makeup brushes until my late 30s.. but good brushes make a huge difference.

What are your favorite make-up brushes? I'm not make-up savvy!

I find the people who works at Sephora very helpful. My 21 year old niece loves Sephora.

Sounds like they're quite different (my DS' girlfriend is a nursing student, very simple style, no makeup, hardly any jewelry) but last year I bought her a very dainty and simple beaded bracelet from Etsy that she seemed to like a lot. The year before, a Kate Spade makeup bag (she uses it for travel toiletries). This year, two books (she's a big reader) and a Spa Finder gift card (can be used for spas, salons, even exercise classes).

You might find a cool makeup bag on Etsy, then put a Sephora card in it.

Or a gift card to an art supply store, tucked inside a nice sketch book?

How about something from Lush? My daughter, who is twentysomething, and her friends love their products. Lots of nice pre-packaged gift sets so it would be an easy shop as well.
