Not really a pernnials question but related
Comments (18)I love Cercis, but my first thought when reading this was Magnolia Stellata. A mature Star Magnolia is really a beautiful sight. I also thought of Heptacodium, and also to toss the Witchhazels into the ring. The Cleveland Botanical Garden has a pair of mature Hamamelis flanking a path that are definitely vase shaped and just beautiful trees. The trunks and branches are curving and very interesting, leaves are unusual and eye catching and I personally get a real lift out of having a floral display in January and Feb. Plus the leaves are very colorful in full sun. I am not sure how fast they grow compared to Cercis. I planted Jelena 2 years ago and it is distinctly vase shaped of its own accord but I am just crazy about those copper-red flowers in the snow. Other possibilities might be one of the smaller multistemmed birch trees or Halesia - depending on how close you are to truly full sun and the style of your home....See MoreBenjamin Moore 2017 Paint Color of the Year
Comments (54)My wife and I liked Shadow a lot in that stairway pic, but after painting the sample on the wall it seemed too light (they used pretty moody lighting in the image). Our room is naturally really bright (day or night) so we went one shade darker on the sample. It's a color called "Galaxy" and love it (but its dark, sometimes it looks black). Sorry if I overload with these pics, have posted before under different topics :) -- Also, it doesn't have the full effect yet, we aren't done (new rug, curtains, bedding, artwork, etc)...See More2017 Perennial Plant of the Year
Comments (17)A few springs ago, I visited a local nursery, and for the first time saw pots of cultivated swamp milkweed for sale, I think 'Cinderella'. I was excited, because there a good price and quite large. To my joy, as I searched through the pots for the 'perfect' one, I noticed one had a small monarch caterpillar! I had them wrap my treasure as best as possible so I could transport this thing back to my garden safely and get a head start on saving the monarchs. I was so excited; I got it to the garden, took pictures and put it on Facebook, etc. For the next few days I would visit it, and could see the little one munching away. On day 3 or 4, I went out there, and where the caterpillar was...looked the remains of an 'accident' - it kind of imploded I guess, or maybe attacked by some parasite. Comments (12)Mmm, new salvias for me too (from Robin Smith) - spathacea, stolonifera, forskaoli, purple leaf macrophylla, involucrata 'Boutin', Penny's Smile and Christine Yeo - a greggii/chamaedryoides hybrid I had and mistakenly gave away before propagating. Fast from seed...plus a freebie yellow (name escapes me but not glutinosa, which lurks in the woods). Salvia is a cyclical craze for me...and I am currently going through an 'on' phase. To be entirely honest, the bulleyana looks more 'interesting' than totally desirable. I grew yellow and purple salpiglossis one year (shudder) and swore not to go down that colour route again. Then again, I have said this about many plants - some of which went on to become beloved....See MoreLaLennoxa 6a/b Hamilton ON
