Not really a pernnials question but related

I posted the below message on the tree forum and hope to get some responses there but since I know that there is no shortage of knowledgeable gardeners on this forum (and a lot more activity!) I was wondering if someone would give it a shot. The tie-in with perennials is that I am looking for a tree that can live in proximity to perennials that need dividing ever so often and therefore the tree must be deep-rooted as opposed to shallow-rooted. It will be the center piece of a courtyard which is bordered by rosa rugosa hedges and has many perennials and bulbs planted in it.

Here's the post:

This may be a tall order, but these are the characteristics I'm looking for in a tree that will dominate my entrance area (which also serves as a court yard with perennials and bulbs:

1. 25-30 feet tall

2. no more than 25 feet spread

3. vase-shaped (you must be able to walk under it in close proximity)

4. not shallow-rooted as it must share area with perennials 6' from trunk

5. relatively fast-growing

6. attractive and fragrant spring blooms

7. good fall colour

8. resistant to gypsy moths (the former tree - an apple tree was killed by them)

9. interesting bark for winter interest

10. some kind of fruit although not necessarily edible

11. full sun

Is this too much to ask of a tree? If you can think of a match, please let me know. Or at least most of them. Thanks so much.

Marianne
