Comments (30)First is the big labeled family photo. Citrus: there's seedling lemon, tangelo, pummelo, yuzu, along with an unlabeled sudachi. There's also a larger grafted yuzu and a grafted calamondin. As for non-citrus, there's three nightshades (tamarillo, naranjilla and coconas), two pots of seedling guavas, and a rather spindly ice cream bean seedling. Third, is a closer view including the big yuzu and calamondin, the pummelo and tangelo in front of them, and the big naranjilla on the right side. Last, this is a close-up of some of the seedling (non-grafted) citrus - from top to bottom, yuzu, pummelo, tangelo and sudachi. The black pot is tamarillo sprouts, which I need to thin out. To me, the only notable thing here is how different papeda-type citrus look from other citrus when young - smaller, slower in growth, smaller leaves, but very lush, small (not visible in this pic) spines, but more of 'em than other citrus. Comments (95)Straw: Thanks for the verses on giants. In various areas of Pakistan, people have strong believe that once upon a time, there used to be giants living around. However, many people do not include them amongst humans.... they think they were genes or some other creatures, not humans. These are the photos of Deosai Plains. Deo means a Giant (from genes, not humans) and sai means land. Deosai means Land of the Giants. Located at 14000 ft above sea level, it's a strip of 60km x 40km and one of the highest plateaus in the world. As per the local legend, once upon a time giants used to live here. Deosai plains remain under snow for around eight months and remain open only from June to September. During these 4 months, millions of wild bulbs and flowers grow here. Most of them are fragrant which leaves Deosai travellers with an intoxicating feels. One loses sense of time when your are sitting in a huge natural grassy lawn just next to a crystal clear stream amongst thousand of wild bubls with intoxicating fragrance. BTW, ancestors of many of the bulbs that we grow in our houses grow here. Deosai is a national park and therefore, no construction is allowed here. What you can see here is just a few kiosks that are established during tourist season. It is also home to the Himalayan Brown Bear....See MoreIt's December, 2016. How is your build progressing?
Comments (183)cp I'll see you and raise you and with only one element of our build - there have been hiccups (that's my euphemism for sh*t hitting the fan) at just about every turn. Our flooring was delivered a couple of weeks ago , 4" white oak, select, 4' - 10' lengths. Only it wasn't. They got the 4" white oak part ok and it was probably select but there wasn't a board we could see in any bundle over 6' and a ton of shorties, 1', 2', 3' - some is to be expected and is needed for end runs and closets but not a large percentage. Our installer did the ordering and was there to receive it but didn't say anything until it was all off loaded and spread through the house. Once DH saw it he told him to take it back and that's when the song and dance started - No one has longer lengths, I called all the mills around here, it's going to be beautiful once it's down and finished blah blah blah. No, take it back, not what we ordered and we're not paying premium for long lengths and then taking this. More song and dance - but the crew has already left, I'll have to see when they can come back, they'll charge me a restocking fee, I'm just a small business owner blah blah blah. After they picked it up the installer asks ME to pay the restocking fee! I said no, I'd CONSIDER splitting it with him after we get the right flooring, installed and finished. Meantime, DH called his old flooring supplier in Chicago, they sent us pics of the bundles showing the lengths, we placed the order and it would get freighted to us in 3 - 4 days which sets us back for the kitchen install but should be ok. I ask installer if his schedule will be clear for install at that time and he says he'd rather not do it now. OK, jerk, good bye. Then I get an email from him with a copy of the bill for restocking fee saying he'd appreciate me paying any portion of it!!! Seriously? Then my portion is 0.0% And that's only part of the story - it just keeps going and going.... Welcome to the world of building. Have I mentioned I'm never doing this again? The house is going to be fabulous but it is coming at such a huge cost to my DH - if I'd known then what I know now........See MoreNEWBIE SEED OFFER FOR DECEMBER 2016 - JANUARY 2017 ONLY
Comments (46)VERY INEXPENSIVE SEEDS. It always hurts financially to pay $5 for a packet of a few seeds, plus $5-8 postage if mail order. This seed distribution project of Val's is wonderful. And I want to introduce newbies to an additional source of great quality almost-free seed. There is a seed company called American that is always sold at Walmart and sometimes at dollar or discount stores. I have never understood how this company can make much profit because printing the paper seed packets probably costs more than they charge. Their seed packets are about 30-50 cents each. They only sell open-polinated, but often the best cultivars of the OPs. The seed packets are put out in Ohio in walmart in March, and generally sell out very fast. I buy all my herb seed from American at Walmart, most of my vegetables (other than tomatoes), and some flower seeds. I have bought this seed for many, many years, and have always been very hsppy with my plants. When I read about Val's wonderful project, I thought I would buy American seed next March to contribute. Then I realized that the postage would cost more than the price of seeds. So it would be less expensive for people to buy this seed themselves instead of paying more postage....See MoreRelated Professionals
