Free bird seeds - don't deadhead your perennials too soon

Many perennials will provide seed for birds. Echinacea (coneflowers), Rudbeckias (black eyed susans and others) and Helianthus (sunflowers) are all easy to grow. I especially enjoy watching the gold finches feeding on Rudbeckia herstonne and Helianthus angustifolia in the Fall. Both reach heights of 6-10' tall and are a spectacular burst of late season color! I usually let the seeds dry on the stalks, but they can also be harvested for feeders. It's a great way to get kids interested in wildlife gardening!
