I do pack away some of my things. I switch out my closet twice a year. For me, it's about having the most seasonal items in reach. Also, I don't want to look at flip flops in January! Another thing I appreciate about our home - the builder utilized our tall ceiling to add a third tier of hanging rods. There are handles and a spring system to pull them down to reach items without a ladder. Using all the vertical space you can is important.

I have plenty of closet space, but it's not all easy to get to. I pull my summer clothes out of the closet when the weather begins to get cold, and discard anything that won't be worn next year. If I did not wear something this summer what is the chance I will wear it next summer? I move my winter things to the easy to get to area, and put the summer things in the more difficult to get to area.

I store winter at the DRY CLEANER. Yup, clean it all, and they keep it for five months, no charge. Summer takes up far less space, I simply move to another closet and a couple crates. Purge first in any season.

We designed our closets that have two tiers. For example now that it is cold and the snow is here we store all our spring and summer clothes on the upper tier and move all the fall and winter to the lower tier. We have separate storage for a boots and shoes in a different location. We find this system works for us very nicely.

Yes, I cycle it in and out...and I HATE it every year. Alas, I do not have the luxury of a big enough closet...or one with revolving racks like the rich girl in that 80s movie. :)

I live in southern California, so my closet is pretty much year round. I need much fewer clothes for cold weather but it is challenging to keep my entire wardrobe in there since my closets are not large enough (what women doesn't want more closet space?). I do have some plastic storage boxes for the top shelf that hold my warmest sweaters when it is summer. I read the "life changing magic of tidying up" book and made some tough decisions to get rid of nice stuff I really wasn't wearing and my ever growing wardrobe of clothes no longer suitable to wear in public (that I had saved to wear around the house). Paring down helps a lot.

I don't cycle things in and out, but I do switch what's easiest to grab (short sleeves in the summer and long sleeves in the winter), which only requires them switching places on the hanging bar. I don't even do it all at once. When it starts getting cold and I decide to wear a long sleeved shirt, I'll hang it at the front of the bar after it gets washed. Once I've worn all the long sleeved shirts, washed them, and put them back, then the rack is switched. :)

I guess I'm not typical of most women. My wardrobe is very streamlined. I just purged again too. There is actually empty shelf space in my small walk-in. As a result, everything stays right where it is all year round. I do have 2 small Ikea chests that I use as nightstands. One holds undergarments, hosiery, and hats. Everything else is in the closet. I remember having to swap out my closet each season when I was a kid. What a pain! I hope to never have to do that again! :)

I use the guest room closet for out of season clothes.

Great topic! Seasonal switch outs can be the perfect opportunity to evaluate every item in your closet. So many people dive into this project and lose steam or get distracted halfway through. To ensure that you organize your things in the best way, come up with a system for cleaning out one area at a time. Start with shoes, move on to your hanging clothes, then the clothes in your drawers, etc. Breaking it down into small manageable projects will make the whole process a lot less daunting.

One of our favorite ways to pare down on clothing is to use the hanger trick: insert all your hanging clothes on the rack with hangers backwards on the rod. When you pick out one of these items to wear, hang it up facing forward. At the end of the season, you can easily tell which items you haven't worn at all - these are the ones to consider letting go.

Since I have a major problem with getting too hot, I wear my Capri's and short sleeved shirts year round. I do incorporate pants and jackets for fall and winter but that's about it. I do have my own closet, which helps a lot!

I live in central Florida, we barely have more than one season. No, I don't cycle clothes and I don't have a lot of clothes. I have 5 pairs of shoes and 3 of them are flip flops.

I have to take my clothes twice a year upstairs to an unused bedroom closet. It is a hassle but when you have to share space with a husband, there is no choice. We did have a nice closet installed and that was awesome except it didn't answer my seasonal clothes-recycling. The good thing is that I do purge twice a year and I am trying really hard not to buy too much. It is very hard...

If you have wardrobe pieces "without partners" that you don't wear, hang them separately so when you go shopping you can bag them up and take them with you and remember to find an item that completes the outfit. I also have a section of items in my closet that are "on probation". If I haven't worn them after a season they get donated.

Besides seasonal adjustments I need to go beyond to adjust for the
continual five pounds up and down. Having four closets would do me well. Isn’t

yes we keep off season clothes in a 3rd floor closet, with 'resort wear' (do they still call it that?) separate so i dont have to dig through everything to go to florida for a week in feb.

i weed out anything in poor condition at the end of summer, that will just go to textile recycling. but good condition clothes i purge at the beginning of that season, so it's more useful to goodwill.

No. That feels like too much clothing for me. I have about 55 hangers for myself, plus some small bins made to fit on the ClosetMaid wire shelving for my socks, undies, pjs. I do not have a dresser. If it doesn't fit within that system, it goes. When I bring home a new item, I cull an old item for the donation bag.
I prefer to layer anyway, plus I live in NC so we don't get super cold winters. On a cold day I'd rather layer a tank, leggings, dress, sweater, any of which can work all year long.
