what should i buy to improve the garden soil?
Comments (4)So you're in zone 8, but where in zone 8? I'm North of San Francisco and our weather has been SO rainy/gloomy/cold that my garden is a month behind! I'm also zone 8ish, but you wouldn't know it with the weather this year! I fill my raised beds with a compost/soil mix from a commercial organic soil place or landscaping co.. After that I use my own compost 1-2xs per year.Sometimes in the fall, if I'm not using a bed for the winter, I'll pile on the free horse or goat manure to soak in and age over the winter.I also use pond water to water from time to time. I've never had a soil test done because all of my raised beds were done at different times with different soils. The only problem I've had was the tomatoes developing some cat smiles. I was advised to add some oyster shell (which we have locally), problem solved! I did buy some organic fertilizer this year, just cause everything is growing so slowly, but haven't used it yet. Maybe I'll try some on some plants, and some without!Big experiment!...See MoreWhat should I buy?
Comments (8)Rob, I'm guessing there will be some Memorial Day sales in a few weeks at the big boxes, so I'd wait for those. If you have a Home Depot, you may want to check there for a Lawn-Boy 10685. They were on sale a few weeks ago for $329...and it looks they are not getting more of them (no more LBs listed on HD web site) so they will be closing them out soon. And my HD manager also told me he thought they'd be closing them out. I'd make your local HD manager an offer of $299. This is an excellent self-propelled mower and gets great reviews here and at other sites. Sears also has a good selection of S-P mowers at decent sale prices. DO avoid the "anniversary" (I forget if it's 50 or 75 or whatever) Craftsman B&S s-p model...I saw four returns of them outside my local Sears with tags saying all the drives were frozen. Epinions.com also has mower reviews. Take each one with a grain of salt, but as a whole they can tell you if a mower has serious issues....See MoreNeed Expert opinions, what should I buy?
Comments (7)I bought that Cub Cadet model a little over two years ago from Home Depot (they were having a 4th of July sale and was able to get it for $190 plus tax). I found it to be a very good performer. Mulch performance was very good  everything disappeared under "typical" height cuts, and mostly disappeared when plowing through overgrown or wet areas. Bagging also was good, although the bag is a bit on the small side. Very even cut and easy to push  it does have ball bearing wheels. Overall construction was excellent for that price point. Love the single lever height adjustment. OHV engine started up on the first pull provided that you set the choke properly. It is a Chinese-made engine, but maintenance parts (air filter, spark plug) are available at HD. IÂm not an engine expert, so I canÂt comment on the longevity of such an engine, but IÂve encountered no problems whatsoever since I purchased it. I wound up giving the mower to my neighbor a few months ago and picked up a Toro Super Recycler (the push model  canÂt recall the exact number). There was nothing wrong with the Cub Cadet. My neighborÂs mower died on him and he couldnÂt afford a new one due to being laid off. He was borrowing my Cub regularly so I told him to keep it (heÂs a great guy that has helped me out many times in the past, so I was happy to be able to do a good turn for him). HeÂs had zero problems with it as well. I asked that he loan it back to me in the fall when I need to bag leaves, since I didnÂt get the bag attachment for the Toro. In comparison to the Toro, the Cub Cadet is a lesser machine across the board  the Toro mulches better, has more solid construction throughout, and a better deck. But, given that the Cub was less than half the price of the Toro, I think it is a great value. I do miss the 19" width  it was easer to maneuver than the Toro in the tight spots. IÂm not familiar with the Poulan, so I canÂt give you a specific recommendation as to which would be better for you. But the Cub has been a great performer for me (and continues to be for my neighbor) so if $65 savings is important, IÂd say go for the Cub....See MoreMy Viking is dead. What should i buy?
Comments (27)riOt, I am sorry that the Viking works. It would be nice to replace it without guilt. I really use our Viking alot! We use it to bake home made pizza almost every weekend, bake bread etc. We baked bread and pizza last night and they were both yum.. The crust was fab! What I hate is the Viking range hood that I bought with the Viking range. The stupid thing is completely underpowered for the kind of cooking we do. I tried to replace the blower with the externally mounted one from another company and we flunked the noise ordinance. Alas, I can't swap out the hood without getting a new range due to matching color issues. We all make "appliance mistakes" in life. The replacement would cost me about $8000 to $10,000 after all is said and done with the custom made hood etc etc. (I want a custom made hood that really works!) That is a pretty large ticket item for me at this point. Try to enjoy the range while you have a holiday from the unreliability with the latest patch job....See MoreSilica
