Fireplace in dining room ok if cased open to family room?
Comments (13)Having the home's only fireplace in a dining room would be strange. If it were a secondary space, it would still be strange, because of the amount of space that it would take up. As in, the room isn't large enough or created around having a fireplace in it. The room itself would have to be larger to accommodate the fireplace and the dining functions. And that was only if it were a secondary fireplace. As a primary, it belongs elsewhere. I'd personally turn the way too far away dining room into the "away" cozy spot with a fireplace and a sofa, and make the odd small breakfast area into a space that could be versatile and serve as both casual and formal eating space. It would be more efficient, and you NEED a spot that isn't open to all of the noise and activity. Right now, everyone has to go to their bedrooms for that. And the breakfast area isn't the most efficient use of space as it stands....See MoreIsland lighting for 11 ft. island
Comments (70)Yes lavender. Same faucet for both sinks (I'm still waiting for a quote back from the plumbing girl on cost though so I'm not 100 percent sure if it will be this one or not- it should be OK though). I really love that faucet and the little hook end. And I like the functionality of the pulldown. At my island sink, I am looking into doing the tapmaster too so it can be turned on hands free. Then I'll have all the functionality of the Delta Pilar but in a faucet that goes better in my kitchen....See MoreCased openings - semi-open layout
Comments (8)Just met with builder - going to raise the cased openings a foot in the dining room. Make the five foot width in dining a six foot width to foyer. Try to just have the ceiling between kitchen and living open completely, no cased header if possible, or as high as possible there. Thanks for feedback! We aren't sure what doing with fireplace and hearth yet, but have done extensive layouts to scale with furniture etc. Our house is fairly closed compared to most around here. I'd consider it semi-open but really that might be stretching it. I don't care for totally open living myself and it doesn't suit the style of our house, although I can definitely appreciate the perks it offers in other homes....See MoreCased Openings with Transoms
Comments (10)I agree with anj_p. Cased openings look better, in my opinion, without transoms. In regards to the ceiling drop from 12 feet to 10 feet, I do not think that it will look odd. We have this same situation at the transition between our kitchen and back hall. What you will need to do is make sure that you maintain the continuity of your trim package. Here's another tidbit: depending on the size of your opening (mine is 12 feet wide but anything over 7 feet), a beaded opening may look better. eta: image taken while standing in the kitchen (12-foot ceilings) facing back hall (10-foot ceilings). The kitchen is 18 feet wide; back hall is quite long but the width is 5-feet....See MoreDLM2000-GW
