Hallmark moments

Do you ever have those moments, memories, snapshots of a perfect event that just make you feel like your watching a Hallmark movie of your own life?

Thanksgiving has long been my most favorite holiday and I LOVE hosting it!! Many of my "Hallmark moment" memories are from Thanksgiving.

The house bustling, people everywhere visiting, watching football, playing a board game, putting together a jigsaw puzzle, playing pool, etc.

I'm very excited that this year I will have 20. I've been working all day, cooking and cleaning house and this evening, I had a "Hallmark moment".

I was cleaning up the kitchen from the days cooking while my 2 oldest were sitting at the island playing Connect 4, my youngest was tired and laying on the couch watching a cartoon before bed and my hubby and other daughter were on the back porch, enjoying the hot tub.

Just family, together, enjoying each other's company. We don't even have guests yet, it's just us. My mind can't help but picture the potential future, kids and grandkids. I'm sure it won't be like I envision but it IS exactly what I picture right now.

Christmas in July.

My mother and father were originally from Canada and immigrated to the US in 1960 when I was two. We ended up in California while all of the grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins lived in Canada so we did not see them very often.

When I was about 10 or 11, we were visiting my maternal grandparents on their ranch during summer vacation from school. Somehow, we came up with the idea to celebrate Christmas together that summer.

We drew names for gift giving, hiked out into the woods to cut a tree to decorate, went Christmas shopping, wrapped all of the gifts and put them under the tree. My grandmother and mother baked pies and made a full on Christmas meal.

I'll never forget that day in the middle of July, gathered around the tree opening presents and later sitting down to a Turkey dinner with all of the trimmings with my siblings, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles and two cousins. Many of them are gone now, but it was something that the family talked about for years afterwards.

Well perhaps in the past but right now it's just my brother, his wife, their two adult children and three sulking adolescents. ha. I know the latter will change in a couple years and then there will be girl and boy friends, then wives and husbands, and more children to begin the wonder all over again. I just hope I'm still around to see that!

Last night around 11:30PM my time, I accidentally posted this thread on the wrong side of our forum. I'm a morning person and usually up at 5:30AM. I've now come to the conclusion that I should NOT be allowed to post online after 9PM, as this is the second time I've done that in the past month(LOL)! Anyhoo, I immediately emailed the the GardenWeb staff and they were kind enough to move my original post and will soon be deleting it so that we're not plagued with 2 of the same posts here. I'm so sorry! In the meantime, I've copied and pasted the two responses that are on my original post here below. Underneath all the drama was a girl who loves, admires, respects and adores you. You're so lucky she could say those things out loud. I only get them in cards. I have one daughter and she's never been an affectionate type but she shows her love in other ways. BUT she had one daughter who is the love of my life and always shows affection, she's 27 now and we chat at least 4 times a week. They all turn out great in the end but as my Mom used to say "Bury them at 14 and dig them up at 21" lol. She had six daughters and one son.

Wow, some interesting stories here! I guess I was lucky that my mom never paid much attention to Christmas tree decorating. When she was busy in the kitchen, she definitely appreciated if someone else took care of the tree! First it was my Dad with me helping a bit, then it was Dad setting up the tree and stringing the lights and me putting all the decorations on, and, finally, just me as Dad was re-assigned to help Mom in the kitchen. Mom's criteria: - The tree must be straight and not fall over; - You shall never use the nice new bedsheets to camouflage the old 5-gallon bucket the tree is in, a leftover piece of white fabric would do; - The tree must be done by the time she gets to setting the table for the holiday dinner; My decorating criteria as they evolved with time: 1) The biggest and brightest balls and pieces all in the front, and the small stuff is crammed in the back. A few pieces got dropped and broken as I crawled under the tree to reach into the back (the tree was in a corner); 2) All the pieces must be on the tree, no matter how crowded. That included a dozen mismatched garlands and two tree toppers. I stuck the smaller topper on a side branch near the top as my Dad held me up. My mom only shrugged when a guest asked her why the second topper; 3) Each piece next to a light of matching color, e.g. green next to green, red next to red and blue next to blue. Purple, orange or multicolored pieces became a problem, so they either didn't go on the tree at all, or got buried deep inside; 4) Placing the balls in symmetrical rows: red balls at the bottom, golden balls in the next row up, blue balls in another row, green balls in a row too, then red balls again, golden balls and so on until I reached the top. The rows of the balls were separated by rows of tinsel garlands. My high school friends loved it; 4) When I was in college, I had a bright idea of decorating the tree with red bows. I still decorate my Xmas tree with bows! :-)

My sister's boy is six and he's so sweet. His father doesn't want to be in his life. We make a big celebration for grandpa on father's day and it's always fun but I wonder what our little guy thinks privately. Sometimes watching a movie with an emotional moment of a father and child, he has a silent tear going down his cheek. I feel so bad then but it's better for him to be surrounded by people that love him than a biological father who doesn't. I think it will always be hard for him whenever this holiday comes around. I don't like it that people get left out. People who outlived spouses or lost children. I wish there was a way to fix that but everyone lives apart in the modern world. Someone said people are happiest in communities of 100-150 with family members living near by. It seems like these holidays are perfect for some and for others uncomfortable. As long as we are talking about holidays, I wish more stores would close on holidays or at least close early. Some people never get a holiday except for New Years or Christmas and sometimes not even New Years. The stores aren't going to let people enjoy a rare day off with family when there's a sale opportunity. I can understand the pharmacy being open but do we really need to deny people a chance to enjoy a holiday so we can buy mattresses or washing machines or whatever they're selling? I remember when grocery stores used to be open a few hours in the morning on Thanksgiving day. Now almost all the stores are open. It's just another day.

Texas, you surely do know what is important, appreciating these easy moments. I treasure any time with my kids or grandkids. Today I'll just be with one of my kids and their family I'll miss the other, but we'll talk on the phone.

Dawn, great memory. Time with family is what's important, not the exact date.

I don't really have a Hallmark memory....but will share a Thanksgiving memory from 1970. We didn't have much in the way of family....and no one to spend it with. And, we were broke on top of that, so we couldn't even afford to go out to eat. So we decided we would go shrimping...make one drag, come in and then go out to eat.

We took the boat out....I was the deckhand...just Jody and me, (no other boats out) and we caught shrimp...lots and lots of shrimp....so we just stayed out and kept dragging. They were small so not worth a lot per pound, but we had $1800 worth, which was considerable back then. It was almost dark when we got to the dock, and no one at the fish house to unload the boat or pay for them. So we unloaded the boat, iced them and put them in the cooler....would get paid the next day. We counted up all the money we had between us and we had enough to buy two turkey tv dinners at a convenience store that happened to be open.
