Have your roses survived this COLD winter?
Comments (47)Well here we are at the end of May and now I think I can safely report that I lost 60 roses out of 137. All but 5 of the ones I lost were planted in pots. In the past it was the potted ones that survived better than the ones in the ground. I don't know quite why this year took it's toll on the pots instead of the ones in the ground either. They were wrapped and packed in leaves just as well as always. Whereas NONE of the ones in the ground were protected at all and most of them survived, albeit cut nearly to the ground, but growing nicely now just the same. So I'm not sure protection made any difference. And I wouldn't put all my money on own root plants either. The 5 in the ground that I lost were 4 own root minis and a Knock Out. And my biggest losses in the pots were all of my own root mini and miniflora show roses. The only mini that survived was X-Rated. Which is weird because it's NEVER been a very vigorous grower for me. And then there are my seedlings. I lost all but 9 out of 78. And all of those are own root of course because they're from seed. So it wasn't protection or whether they were grafted or own root that made a difference as far as I can tell. Just the fickle finger of fate I think....See MoreGreenhouse Winter Temperature in Z6b?
Comments (21)StressBaby... I'm not so sure about tha causes of citrus leaf drop. I have 5 or 6 citrus, a couple of mandarin oranges, a couple of grapefruit and a couple of I-forget-what-i-planteds. The oranges tended to get infested with spidermites over the winter so a few years ago a decided to toss them in the garage for the winter as i just didn't want the mites spreading to other plants. My garage walls are insulated and i do have insulated doors, but there is no addotional heat. All heat is from the windows (I have 3 large south facing windows), what must leak out from the house (insulated 2x6 contruction) and whatever heat comes from the engines. I am in zone 5, massachusetts. I do occasionally get ice on the floor if the outside temps stay below zero for a few days. That first year, i did get the leaf drop you describe. I really thought i had lost them all. One lost about 90% of it's branches, the rest lost most of their leaves. But come Spring, they cam back to life and recovered fully. The following year, i decided to take better care of them since they deserved a bit of credit. I made sure i stuck to a weekly watering plan and that was enough to prevent almost ANY leaf drop. I did get a bit of freeze damage on one tree closet to the doors. This was closer to the springtime when they had started sending out new growth. SO i have now overwintered the in the unheated garage for 3 winters. Temps have been as low as -19F at night outside, and i hardly get the leaf drop. I am of the mind that it was completely due to my neglect that first winter and the lack of water. This winter i plan to put a themometer in the garage so i have an idea of what the temps actually are, but i am pretty much amazed they do so well. Comments (13)I have a question along these lines & thought it would be proper to bring it up in this post rather than start a new thread. What about Lemon Balm? Would it survive outdoors during a Z6b (Middle TN) Winter? Worst low temp probably only a few days of 15-20. Otherwise, average low of about 30 or so. If it wouldn't survive in these conditions, what's the lowest possible temps it can stand for long periods (would let me know where I would need to keep it; if storage closet would do or if it would need more warmth)? Also, will it need constant or much light during the Winter to survive? Any & all help appreciated. A friend has offered me 5 baby Lemon Balm plants & I don't want to take them if they will just die in my care. Thanks - Steve...See MoreHIll's hardy or arp rosemary???? Does it survive????? :)
Comments (9)Hi. No good news here about arp rosemary *sigh* Iplanted it in spring 2003, it grew into a great healthy bush over the summer and into fall, then froze up in January and died. It was in an herb bed with really great soil and southeastern exposure.Incredibly dissappointing. Since I use so much rosemary, in years before this, I have tried growing a number of varieties, including Tuscan, which is supposed to be pretty hardy and nothing lasted the winter. HOWEVER, just an hour south, in central Jersey, a friend of mine has a HUGE thriving Tuscan rosemary bush she nhas had for years ... poor soil, southern exposure, growing up against the stone wall of her house ... I'm thinking the stones must heat up and create a microclimate in the winter. Hope this helps, good luck, Diana...See MoreCommon Cents
