Sun requirements

I know what "Full shade" and "Full sun" means but what is/are the difference(s) between "Partial shade", "Filtered sun" and "Partial sun"?

Part sun and part shade are pretty much the same thing and the terms tend to be used interchangeably. Generally, it means receiving 4-6 hours of sunlight, with the part sun plants happiest on the higher end and the part shade plants on the lower end.

'Filtered' or 'dappled' sun refers to sunlight that is screened to some degree, usually through the branches of an open canopy (deciduous) tree but it can also be generated by an overhead structure, like an arbor or gazebo. Sometimes also called 'indirect' sun.

Here's a photo of my patio. What sun/shade category would apply to the area on the right (next to the house) and to the area on the left (in the sunlight)?

Although Achillea certainly do like full sun, full sun in California zone 9 in front of a reflective stucco wall might be just too much. Though I'd think they'd burn up rather than flop. It's kind of like people in the pacific northwest who talk about plants that can handle drought. "Drought" in pacific northwest terms is NOTHING like drought in most of the rest of the country.

Cori Ann, I just now noticed your query. For some reason, I only get email notifications of threads I've posted to, not those I've started! Who know why? Anyway, I've fretted over my Heathcliff and am debating if I should move him while he's dormant or just wait to see what he does. I planted him at the worst time and then had to move him again since I'd put him in slightly the wrong position; I think I damaged his roots as he sulked. He gave me one magnificent bloom after planting (can not describe the unusual colour or lovely to me tea scent). Then we had a 50/100 year rain with over 5" in one hour that went on all night. Almost everything got BS and Heathcliff was hardest hit. . He did nothing and seemed to be going backwards, while everything else recuperated. Of course, by that time the sun had moved behind the spruce and he was in shade most of the time. He had looked great while in the pot, so I know he CAN be good. While prepping his bed this week, I did notice he was pushing out new growth from the bottom, so maybe he just needed some time to acclimate. Wish I had more to tell you, but we're still supposed to be winter. His growth habit seems to be upright and bushy as described. Those blooms looked so pretty mixed with Viking Queen, Sugar Moon and Falstaff, maybe I'll just see how it goes.

Heathcliff: size, growht habit, sun requirements?

We planted a grafted Heathcliff plant in our northern CA garden last year. It is planted on the north side of our home along with other red Austin roses (The Squire x 3; The Dark Lady x 3; Darcy Bussell x 3; The Prince x 2; Young Lycidas; and Munstead Wood x 3). We planted them on the north side of our home, as our sunlight in this part of CA is intense and we thought that the color would fade less in this exposure than it would in full sunlight. We have experienced the hottest summer here this year than in the previous summers since we moved here 6.5 years ago, with many days consecutive days in triple digits. Still, some of the flowers "crisped" (mostly with MW) even though we were generous with water on the hottest days. I do think that this rose benefitted from being planted in this exposure. There is a planting bed with 6 redwood trees, 5 flowering plum and 2 deciduous magnolias to the east of this rose bed, that provide it with some shade until 9 AM; it then receives direct sun until around 2 PM; later it is in the shade of our home for the rest of the day. Heathcliff has grown to 4 to 5 feet tall x 2-3 feet wide so far; it may well get larger in the next few years. Its growth habit is more like a hybrid tea so far than the other red roses in this bed. The others have a more twiggy growth, which we find more appealing. The repeat on this rose is average at best.

Thanks! Yes - @Dawson, definitely have critters in the neighborhood, the neighbors non-fenced gardens were hit pretty bad last year. Squirrels, chipmunks, voles, and occasionally deer. Strangely enough, haven't ever seen a rabbit, but it seems likely they'd be around. I think we'll build a raised bed in the back, but i'll try the melon and maybe the squash in both places and see how it goes. Have seen a couple articles on trellising melons & squash, maybe that would be a more attractive way to incorporate them into the front. Not sure that will deter the critters, but at least they'll have to climb for it! :)

just start buying.. lol ... you have a spectrum of brightness there.. so you can.. over time.. move things around.. to find its own preference ...

your trying to split hairs.. based on nebulous words ... just do it ...

for some plants.. the shade issue is the plants ability to pump enough water in sun ... the water hogs do better in some shade ... e.g. hosta ...

some plants need full sun.. for giant flower production ... lesser sun.. might just reduce this A BIT ... you might say.. vigor might be reduced ...

talking/learning about the variable is fantastic.. but you cant go all type A on planning on this variable.. youre going to have to go more zen.. and wing it...because when it all boils down.. no one but you is going to figure it out.. after experimenting ...

all that said.. that is somewhere between 45 and 60% shade .... only limit i see is growing trees.. and who is going to do that under your trellis[???] .... but small ones could be on the left ...

just wing.it ... get things that excite you ... nothing will die for lack of a little bit too little light .... and if they suffer a bit.. move them toward the left ... for most of us.. gardening is not a plant once forever ... we move things.. and all yours will be in pots.. so it will be easy peasy ...

just have fun doing it ....

At best it is a part sun/shade situation but mostly filtered or dappled shade. I would thinj that most shade loving plants would be happy in that placement as few prefer very heavy or dense shade.
