Montauk daisy with minimal summer sun

I have a patch in my yard that gets a lot of sun in early spring before the trees fill in and again in fall when leaves start to fall. Would a montauk daisy do well there or should they really have full sun throughout summer too? Zone 6 / in CT. Or another suggestion?

For a late summer/fall blooming, sun-loving plant like Montauk daisy, it really needs good summer sun, though it wouldn't have to be all day if the rest was bright shade such as along an east-facing building.

Many of the spring ephemerals like blood root would do well. Or other plants that complete the majority of their lifecycle before the leaves fill in such as some of the earliest bulbs: crocus, early daffodils, or tall Alliums. Or plants that thrive in shade such as hostas, Solomon's seal/Polygonatum, Actea (AKA Cimicifuga)/bugbane, ferns, ginger/Asarum, etc. Often brightly colored or variegated foliage in a range of textures, size, and shape do well as the main show in areas where the flowers are finished by late spring.

how many hours of sun.. in summer .. rather than telling us other season sun ...

as a clue.. whats growing there now??

nothing really dies due to less sun ... they just dont perform.. flower to expectation ...

and... no one can really tell what will happen in your spot ...

so what most of us would do ... is live our dream.. plant what you want ... and then. if it doesnt perform.. next fall.. move it to another spot.. or just be done with it ...

you cant plan everything.. so just wing it ....

In your zone, I would be concerned that chopping them in half would encourage regrowth, and this is not the time of year you want plants putting out tender new growth. I would most likely take a pair of old style hedge pruners and deadhead in a few big whacks, and then wait until it is colder, or even early spring to prune back by half.

I was asking about them in another thread in this forum, along with a photo I took just this past week. I like them, but wouldn't want them to take over, might not always be able to deadhead them. I think they would be pretty mixed with lilies like stargazer, wouldn't work with daylilies. These do leave a little breathing room because they don't crowd out all the grass some places they are planted. My shastas took over a whole bed where I wanted a mix of poppies, bachelor's button, alyssum. And they need a lot of water where they are, too much. These others look like they can easily withstand never being watered except by rain. Does anyone know how long they bloom? Here is a link that might be useful: My thread about this daisy

etexlady - I found this plant at Lowe's last fall about bloom time. I have it planted in part shade. It is growing fine - we'll see how the really hot weather affects it, but I have noticed the leaves are getting mottled - like little pin pricks all over them - must be some type of stinging insect or something. Since it hasn't bloomed yet this year can't say whether the bees are attracted to it. I didn't notice bees on it last fall when I planted it. If it does well this year, it's going to replace my shasta daisies for which Montauk is a parent. I love the shasta bloom, but they just don't bloom long enough, and the blooms always fall over in my garden.

Just to jump in and clarify a bit: Joe-Pye Weed and asters are different creatures entirely. Joe-Pye is eupatorium (and the chocolate, in my garden anyway, is just beautiful -- hasn't become remotely invasive yet, though I gather it self-seeds for many). You can't beat the gorgeous foliage color! Asters come in lots of varieties but I don't know of any that are considered invasive -- mine certainly aren't, though I have mostly low-growing varieties. I got most of them from the NW Conservation District, which doesn't sell non-natives or invasives (though they may be defining "invasive" slightly differently than you are, I suspect :) The CT Ag Station recommends a newish cultivar, "September Ruby," which gets tall (3 to 4 foot flower stems) -- I don't have it, but lots of people online seem to love it. Might be worth checking out? Don't blame you for deep-sixing the Montauks. I had them at my old house and they ALWAYS flopped (as does my Helianthus Lemon Queen -- I don't recommend that unless you have a fence or backdrop of some sort to hold it up, since it gets extremely tall! ) Good luck!
