I read this thread and kind of marvel. The effort people expend to grow plants in a hostile climate. I bought a $5 sago 40 years ago when I bought my house, it is over six feet tall The male flower is (like) two feet long, every year for at least the past 15 years. A flush consists of at least two dozen fronds , (or leaves) if you prefer. I have successfully raised and given away probably three dozen pups broken off from the parent plant. Most survive, maybe 80% but some don't. It gets cold here, we are at 1700 ft. elevation and freezes some years but I have never had a sago show damage from frost. Plumaria, that's another crap shoot, but the sagos do very well here. I have managed to keep twenty pups that are well established and in the ground. In other words, this climate is very agreeable for sagos and they are common all around here, seems like everybody has at least one? I'm not rubbing your nose in it here; I salute the effort to grow (what is almost a tropical), in a climate which is not suitable. Good luck. LB PS no coconut palms here, lots of King Palms but by far the most popular and numerous palm in this area is the Queen.

Those aren't actually coconut palms, they are different fruiting palms that make fruit that has a somewhat similar taste to coconuts. The fruit doesn't look like coconut palms and neither do the palms themselves, but that doesn't mean they aren't any less beautiful though! I'm not familiar with the term Brazilian Wine Palm. I think you might be talking about a Jubaea chilensis (I know it as a Chiliean Wine Palm). They don't do well in Florida because they like cooler climates like those in the western US (or in Chile where they are native). They are VERY cold hardy though and also very beautiful! Quito coconut palms (Parajubaea cocoides) don't actually make fruit as far as I know but they look a lot like coconut palms which is what makes them very common for gardeners who want the tropical look but live in climates a bit too cool for coconut palms. Beccariophoenix alfredii is a palm really well known for being a "coconut look a like". It's only hardy into the mid to upper 20s so it's not significantly cold hardy, but it can handle cooler summers than coconut palms and those few degrees of cold tolerance make a big difference in climates that do get an occasional freeze every one in a while. It's dead. If it's one of a multiple trunk palm, cut it down, close to the other three. If it's a single, dig it out.

You so funny OD! I remember most because I have them. I keep a notebook with the palms I have written down so that I can track their progress. Its right by the computer so I can just look in there. Usually at the box stores here they have just the more common stuff that we can use in the landscape or in the poolcage...Foxtails, Queens, Trachys, Pindos, Silver Date, Pygmy Date, Chinese Fan, Cat, and like that. Having anything more exotic is becoming more commonplace though. They are starting to stock all sorts of stuff now as people get more into tropical plants. They will now stock large containers of blooming Alpinia purpurata and people will plant it as an annual knowing its probably going to be dust after the winter. Many many people here already use the smaller psitticorum heliconias as late season annuals, putting them in "in bloom" after the extreme summer heat has axed the fall and spring color. Many people here want more tropical stuff so its only a matter of time before we get some even neater palms that we don't have to go to Orlando or more South to find, or buy as tiny seedlings mail order. I just wish that they would learn to label them correctly.
