Walmart has Bottle Palms and Coconuts

I was at Walmart today to look for some butterfly/bee garden plants and they had Bottle Palms and Coconut Palms for sale.

They have coconuts every year, usually "just recently sprouted" nuts for $4.99. But this time they actually had some decent sized, very healthy trees (about 6 ft) for $14.95. I know I shouldn;t have, but I bought one (sigh....what will I do with it later?)

They also had a very nice healthy crop of decent sized Bottle Palms, but they had them mislabeled as "Triangle Palms". They weren't Dypsis decaryi...if they had been I would have jumped on one fast, as those are pretty hardy here and I have been looking for one... but they were nice Bottles about 4-5 ft tall with trunks already forming the desired shape. Also $14.95. These were 3 gallon sizes.

So if you are in the market for either of these check out your local Walmart.

Bihai You might be the person to ask this question as I'm stumped but then to me the only king of palms there are feather and fan lol
Anyway at HD they had a palm with 4 fronds around 6 feet tall . The fronds were entire and very pointed . The interesting part was it was a very deep bronze color.almost no green.Petioles were about 6 inches the rest being frond almost as wide as tall.. The only labe was "Umbrella palm"
Only thing i know by that name is a water plant not a palm at all. looked much like a Joe palm but the color and no pleats. and the points. No thorns Any idea what species this could be??
I went there to get some plumbing parts so noe pic. lol
I feel it was not a Joe or fan but had no feathering at all. gary

I bought a coconut from a supermarket in Montreal Canada 3 weeks ago and didn't know whether I should eat it or try growing it. After almost a week I removed it from its plastic wrapping and gave it a shake listening to all its milk swishing around inside. I thought to myself.."how can I get this thing to grow without a husk???" First thing I did was soak it in very hot water everyday for 2 weeks. I would then remove it from sitting in water for up to 3 hours a day and place it inside a sealed plastic bag (to trick it into thinking the plastic bag was its husk) with lots of air inside. I then sat it with its 3 eyes pointed up inside the bag and mounted onto a coffee cup into a corner of the room. Everyday I would continue the hot water procedure and then put it back into its bag sitting on the coffee cup. After about a week of doing this 1 of the 3 flat eyes suddenly swelled up and popped out like a nipple. After a couple days of putting it into the hot water bath..suddenly (today) the nipple wood gave way and behind it was a white sprout like a potato's eye sprout. This is where the story ends because I'm going to plant it and watch what happens..but so far my "grocery store" coconut is showing promise. The idea is to trick it into believing that it has its husk by placing it into a sealed tight plastic bag and letting the humidity increase around it and kick it into action. Growing coconut palms should be fine in Kissimmee, especially since you are south of Orlando. I have seen some very pretty coconuts and royals at Sea World in Orlando, so you should have no problems in Kissimmee, especially if you plant them on the south side of your house, about 10 feet from the house to give them room to grow. If you are worried about it, plant some Jamaican (Atlantic) Talls since they are slightly more cold hardy than the Malayan Dwarfs (tall hardy down to about 27 as opposed to about 29 for the dwarfs). Get some that are about 4ft. tall and plant them now. They should be established before winter gets here. The Orlando area has a similar winter climate to here where I live (Harlinge area of Texas). Actually Orlando is slightly milder, with Jan. highs and lows averaging 70/48, whereas here we average 67/48, and we still have 20ft. tall coconut palms around here. The ones near the coast at Port Isabel and South Padre, even produce coconuts, when the winters are mild enough. I have seen a Mexican Tall in Port Isabel that must be about 30-35ft. tall!

@HU-289797433 Siting is everything for these. You'll want to plant them in some sort of protected microclimate if you have one available. If you can provide overhead canopy and protection from wind coming from the north and the west it will increase your chances of success. Close to a heated building helps, especially if there is a lot of brick and/or concrete in the area. Ideally, a southeast facing alcove with some form of high overhead canopy that lets light in underneath is the best bet. If you want to cheat a little, wrap it with the old school Christmas lights (aka not LED) and keep the bulbs away from the plant tissue. Even with all of the protective factors in place, there are still times where you'll have to tie up the fronds and wrap at least the growth point to keep it alive. If you get one at a big box store, it will likely be some kind of Malayan Dwarf. If possible, get the Green Malayan Dwarf. If you seek out one of the special cultivars, keep in mind their strengths and weaknesses: Jamaican Tall/Atlantic Tall: Grows extremely fast with an almost spherical crown, tends to have a touch more cold tolerance (not always), but very susceptible to Lethal Yellowing and Lethal Bronzing and does not tolerate root disturbance very well. Panama Tall: One of my friends grows these and says that they tend to hold a few less fronds than the above with similar strengths. Tend to be slightly less susceptible to disease. Maypan: A hybrid between a Malayan Dwarf and a Panama Tall. Decent compromise with a little bit of a fuller crown than the Malayan Dwarf. The coconut on these palms is huge. Mine sprouted from a coconut larger than an NBA basketball. I recently had to do some digging near this one and it did not immediately go into decline when I trimmed a few roots, so it shouldn't be as intolerant of root disturbance as the Talls. Green Malayan Dwarf: Not a true dwarf - just slower growth than a Tall cultivar. Their crown tends to be more umbrella shaped and the trunk a little more straight up and down. A technician from Spectrum decided to take it upon themselves to trim half the roots on mine without me knowing and sent it into decline. It had one frond and a spear left. I fertilized with Florikan, covered the exposed healthy roots and gave it supplemental water. It regrew its crown. Much more tolerant of root disturbance than the Talls. Golden Malayan Dwarf: Similar to above but the petioles will be golden and the coconuts will be too for a period of time before they turn brown and fall. From my experience, these seem to be the least tolerant of cold out of all the common varieties. Fiji Dwarf: Some growers are experimenting with this cultivar. It is a true dwarf that I've not seen grow over 6 feet of trunk. Supposedly almost totally resistant to Lethal Yellowing. Because Lethal Bronzing is a similar disease, it might be resistant to this as well. The crown is very large, but this would be the easiest coconut cultivar to keep alive since a blanket or two would allow you to easily protect the growing point at maturity. Another advantage is that you don't have to worry about being sued because someone died from a falling coconut. The other cultivars carry this risk since they get very tall. At least the initial reports from folks who have this cultivar are that it didn't take an inordinate amount of cold damage compared to the others. The coconut on I-Drive looks to be a Tall of some kind and has a lot of concrete and running cars around it at all times. If you provide your palm with the appropriate care, you will be successful. Update: Both coconuts died within a 3 weeks of being home. Last winter's brutal temps and my struggles to keep the greenhouse in one piece resulted in 2 dead coconuts. :( Laura in VB - if you're still on here - that's why you never got one. Sorry. However, I am not discouraged..... Generation 2 greenhouse is WAY stronger, better insulated, better heated etc. Temps dropped to 39 F ONCE during a power failure, and otherwise never fall below 48 at night. Day temps are routinely over 70 (usually 75-90). I don't know if this helps, but by way of comparison - my Cavendish banana flowered and is producing a huge bunch of fruit, all my citrus trees (especially the lemon) are flowering like crazy and growing fast. I would take this as a sign that a coconut should manage such conditions. SO - I have located a 5' tall coconut palm at a Home Depot in Jacksonville which I will take home this weekend. Hopefully the combination of getting in there with the worst of the winter behind us (hopefully), it being a bigger tree, and the improved greenhouse will mean success.

I am really, REALLY flattered that you would think I might know the answer! But I am just a palm-wannabee-person.

In my research on deciding what palms I might want to buy for my greenhouse, the only entire-leaved ones I have/thought about getting that fit your description (except for the all bronze leaves) are the 2 Joeys, Borsig's Palm (Phoenicophorium borsiganum), Pelagadoxa henryana, Marojejya daranii, and Marojejya insignis.

Salacca magnifica (my own probably mosy fave palm) would be OUT due to the spines.

The only palms I have heard of with the "common" name "Umbrella Palm" are Hedyscepe canterburyana and Corypha umbraculifera neither of which fit the description at all.

What a neat sounding palm though! How much was it???? Did you buy it?

I got a Hedyscepe canterburyana, its going to be beautiful when it gets big.

Bihai do you remember how to spell all those names or do you look them up. LOL I would have to look everything up.

What you found that may have been bronze is a freakish juvenile Bizzy.

I remember most because I have them. I keep a notebook with the palms I have written down so that I can track their progress. Its right by the computer so I can just look in there.

Usually at the box stores here they have just the more common stuff that we can use in the landscape or in the poolcage...Foxtails, Queens, Trachys, Pindos, Silver Date, Pygmy Date, Chinese Fan, Cat, and like that.

Having anything more exotic is becoming more commonplace though. They are starting to stock all sorts of stuff now as people get more into tropical plants. They will now stock large containers of blooming Alpinia purpurata and people will plant it as an annual knowing its probably going to be dust after the winter. Many many people here already use the smaller psitticorum heliconias as late season annuals, putting them in "in bloom" after the extreme summer heat has axed the fall and spring color.

Many people here want more tropical stuff so its only a matter of time before we get some even neater palms that we don't have to go to Orlando or more South to find, or buy as tiny seedlings mail order. I just wish that they would learn to label them correctly.

I googled "umbrella palm" and all the entries were Cyperus alternifolius with one entry on Hedyscepe canterburyana. Good choice for s. florida. Anyway it didn't even faintly resemble it.
Was told by a neighbor that it was a Curculigo metallica.
. If it is sure didn't look like the one I have. Bronze is only on the underside and has the distict pleats. I also have Curculigo orchidoides "palm orchid" but it is solid medium green there was some resemblence but the HD one was much larger in every respect.
Bihai Along with no tag there was no price either lol.
Have thinned out all my palms except for J altifrons as I don't have the patience to work with them. Concentrating on the epiphytes mostly. Palms take up soooo much room anyway.
Anyway thanks for the help. Guess it will remain mystery lol gary
