Comments (12)How about an owl! Ace Hardware in Denver has an owl advertised right now that you can get online too. See below. IÂve seen these before, buy never an animated one like this is. At my last houseÂa rentalÂI had something pecking somewhere "on top" too for a while. It lasted for several weeks. I later had downy woodpeckers build a nest in my dying cottonwood, and sometimes wondered if it had been them, but I think the woodpeckers pretty much stuck to the trees, so IÂd say a flicker is a pretty good guess for the noisy guest. And the noise was always early in the morning tooÂjust like you. Back in the early 70's in an apartment I had the same thing happen, but that time they were just outside and above my bedroom window under the roof overhang, so every morning, as soon as they came, I pounded on the window a few times to scare them away, and after a week or so, they gave up. The did come back the next spring and I had to repeat the whole thing. ItÂs AMAZING how much noise they can make! Back in the 80's, at my house in Parker, the house was absolutely mobbed by pidginsÂdozens and dozens and dozens of themÂthe roof and everything else was covered with poop, so I found this inflatable snakeÂlike BIGÂand put it up there, and it actually workedÂfor a while. The Colorado sun fairly quickly did a number on the plastic, though, and it deflated, and apparently it wasnÂt scary anymore because it quit working. Comments (5)Okay, I'm probably not being clear. The roof is okay, but the chimney is crumbling and water has gotten in through the bricks. It should also be capped, because water (and critters) can just get in through the opening. My roofer put some tar around the chimney to keep the water out until I can have it fixed. So the problem is the chimney - I don't need to do anything with the heating system. Comments (13)What a bummer. Chimney's design looks attractive though being on exterior wall, doubt the draft is very strong. Guessing that's why height was added. Agree you need a third party professional who specializes in this type of evaluation. The metal roof work looks great but the weakness of most above roof masonry is the flashing. Best practice veneer masonry flashing features through-wall designs. It's not rocket science but tough to find the right craftsman and more expensive to do it right. Most projects use the cheap version, saw cut reglet counterflashing which is probably what you have. Your tall chimney provides plenty of opportunity for water to make it through the surface of the brick. The water could be coming in at the chimney cap or pinholes/gaps in the surface coating. It seems like the brick might have held too much moisture at the time of it's paint job. If it's redone, allow the striped brick to fully dry and coat after warm, dry weather. No one wants to hear it but the best thing to do with chimneys is stop using them and tear them down. 7 years agotoxcrusadr....sorry, by 'owner' I meant owner of the roofing company.
So far, I've gotten one estimate from a reputable company and will probably go with them since they've been very professional and great in communicating with me.
The tech that gave me an estimate said there is a soft spot around the chimney and he will repair that along with another area that is starting to rot. The second area is where the carport was attached to the roof incorrectly.
geoffrey.....according to the tech the rest of the roof looks fine.........shingle quality is good, lines are straight, edges cut as they should be and cap done correctly. I have no doubt the tech found rot because I poked around the area before I flew home and knew there was decayed wood near the front edge of the chimney.
The house is located in Miss. so there's not much worry about snow and ice but they do get their share of rain.
Just have to add one last pic.....the gutter will be replaced on my next trip home.
