Double-sized gaps between schluter edge and tile?

Hi all, i selected schluter quadec edging for my shower niche, and it was installed today. It appears that the gap between the edging and tile on the interior of the niche is 2x wider than all the rest of the grout lines. The regular spacing is 1/8" and the gaps inside the niche at the edging are 1/4". Am I missing a reason why this should be so? I plan to ask my contractor tomorrow but thought I'd also get the forums opinion!

Very easy to pop those tiles and recut them a bit wider.

As to why it happened? No idea. The installer might have been trying to make the most out of an offcut, or simply mis-measured, or mis-cut, or...the installer thinks it's all good as is.

You're well within bounds to ask that they be R&R'd for a better fit.

Excellent job being proactive and catching this before grout.

I'd even give the installer a phone call or email tonight and let him know to save him a possible round trip back to the shop tomorrow in case he shows up tomorrow with nothing but a bag of grout and a grout float, ready to grout.

I used Schluter edge on the outside edges of the backsplash that runs vertically behind my cooktop. There is very little gap betweeen the edge and the tile. All Quadec edging except the stainless steel has an integrated joint spacer. Acccording to their website installation video the spacing should be 1/16" to 1/8". I hope your tiler will redo the area in question the correct way.

"It's not about size. It's about layout." Obviously they shouldn't have started with a full tile at the wall. But this is what many DIYers do and this is what they did. They didn't want to get involved with cutting tiles and figuring out the sizes of the two ends. They just wanted to lay them down. Based on that, they should have selected a different tile size which would have allowed them not to think and just lay them down in whole pieces.

While I do agree that the job should have been done correctly the first time, there is a possibility that the OP can still get resolution and maybe it's not time to throw in the towel just yet. A recent poster just went through some quality issues with a low-cost pre-fab company and they refunded her money, so resolution is not impossible. The OP posted on Saturday, so maybe the shop is closed for the weekend. And as adreak100 suggested, the OP's CC company or bank may be able to assist. " ... Lowest price fabricator that you could find? Or double the price of that guy? If the first, you got what you paid for. The second, you wouldn't have even had to make the call because the problem wouldn't exist." Maybe the OP was working in a very strict budget. It doesn't mean they shouldn't get a decent job where the gap can at least be covered by the backsplash of their choice. It's not really fair to say that everyone who doesn't pay the highest price deserves to get ripped off. Just MHO. " ... I've been going back and forth on this same topic for the white ceramic subway tile I'll be installing as a backsplash in my kitchen. I'm using a 2"x4" mosaic. The problem is they don't make matching bullnose pieces. I can get them in bigger sizes and try and cut them down with a wet saw, but they're thicker than the mosaic (1/4" vs. 5/16"). I'll have some areas where the edge of the tile is open (i.e. doesn't terminate into a wall or cabinet). For those edges, I really just want a matching 2"x4" bullnose piece with the bullnose on the short edge. In the upper corner, I want a 2"x4" bullnose piece with a bullnose on both the short and long edges. For the top row where it's open, I want 2"x4" bullnose pieces with the bullnose on the long edge. I looked at the Schluter, but I really didn't like it. I'm going for a more rustic look, and I think it has more of a modern look. The solution I finally found was a place down in Cincinnati where you send them pieces of your field tile and they make them into bullnose pieces to your specification with a kiln fired finish. That way everything matches my field tile. It's costing me about $4 per bullnose tile, but it's giving me exactly the look I want. I think they have a minimum order amount of $50.

I’ve never heard of this natural crown. Most companies by lineals that are long and straight then cut to size. Naturals crowns are not supoose to be there not would I consider them part of the design . IMO it would be characteristic design of a week sill and unwanted but not always a 100% avoidable. Sometimes this can happen when the sill of the existing frame is high in the middle and the window is installed directly on top and not shimmed on the outside corners. I put a staight edge on the sill of my lowest line of windows and my high end , both are straight., Any bowing is gonna come from install IMO. I agree msnufactures can be cheap and the screen is often overlooked . The screen frame itself is subseptible to bowing if screened to tight and I prefer one that has latches to hold it down tight and reqiures a separate motion to release. I have requested this feature to my manufacturer more than once to no avail. If manufactures are humping there sills in purpose they should incorpate a pile weatherstipping or katch that draws it down tight. I would try pushing down in the screen frame corner before anything else as it is the easiest and often works.

Thanks for the comments! Unfortunately I think I will have to live with it. I spoke to him about it yesterday, and he agreed it was his error. He offered to fix, but said it would require ripping out a fair bit of the tiles in that area. He thinks it will be hard to get the angle to pry off the tiles cleanly and is concerned about pulling away the niche substrate. I don't have many extra tiles, so more would need to be ordered and there's a high minimum order quantity. My grout is meant to match, so I'm hoping this isn't very noticeable once completed. I hope letting it go isn't a mistake that will bug me in the future! The niche's placement is not very visible by design.

BS....He can "tap" and break out the offending tiles and re-cut them. Any Tile Mechanic worth his salt can do this repair.
