16th Annual Save the Roses! Auction

Don't forget that Friday is the last day for online bidding for the 16th Annual Save the Roses! Auction. The yearly auction is held by the California Coastal Rose Society and its purpose is to help preserve the genetics of roses, which may be in danger of disappearing. All proceeds are invested back into the production of hard-to-find roses. Over two-thirds of the 250 plus roses offered are not available from any other sources.
While it is held the second week of November in Oceanside, CA, online bidding was added 5 years ago. The society is happy to hold roses until Spring for those in colder climates. We appreciate the donations and support from rose lovers all over the country!

Hi Beth. As you know, they have some fantastic and virtually unattainable roses! Anja Taschner was one of the presenters at the auction and her PowerPoint presentation was truly amazing. It turns out that the Arizona climate was not ideal for their business model. Anja says that they are going to spend a while touring the US to find a spot that works better for them. Hopefully we'll soon be able to get more of Ludwig's phenomenal varieties. Btw, your Strawberry Fayre is almost big enough to ship. email me directly to let me know when you'd like and send me an address again. Take care!

If living in a colder climate, will these roses be shipped or must they be picked up? Thank you for posting this if only to dream.

If you would like us to hold plants until Spring, we are happy to ship when it is convenient for you to plant in your area. We are able to ship whenever winning bidders desire. Thanks for your interest!

Beth, I noticed an outbreak of similarly coloured petunias appearing all over the UK (gold and maroon) which caused me to literally avert my eyes on walking past. As a rule, I am a lover of bright colours (no beige in my house or wardrobe) but am strictly old school when it comes to roses - white or pink (or palest yellow at a pinch). Course, that does not apply to the dahlia beds, nor the many rows of cutting gladioli or luridly coloured annuals (apart from said petunias) in my allotment. Particularly enjoying a combo of orange, purple, deep red and acid green.......just not in the roses. And yeah, striped roses, not even pink and white, really do it for me but I was agog at the variety available in the US.

Hi Karen. Yes, you are right. The Peggy lee was a clerical error. We are a non-profit, all volunteer organization and have to rely on people willing to volunteer. This was our most spirited auction ever and to complicate matters, the computer went down in the middle of tabulating the results. We are checking with hard copies to resolve a few minor mistakes and I double checked your bid sheet. So sorry that you didn't win anything this year, but we really appreciate your involvement. The good news is that we not only have the funds for next year's auction, but also enough to get some varieties from Europe that do not exist in the US.

@Lilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca Yes! So easy to go higher than intended on an item when there's social proof validating its worth! Add to that the rationalization that it's for a good cause and it doesn't even feel like you're paying that much for a rose, you're making a donation to a non-profit preserving all the roses! And the rose you get at the end is more like a thank you gift! In my case, I did increase my bid on Cyril because of the competition and FOMO, but gave up on a few other roses I wanted into order to stick to my original budget.

AAAACK! I've been working on my bidding list all week, and just went back on to send it in, and it's CLOSED????? When did it close????? How was I supposed to know?????

Thanks to everyone who made this year's auction a success. The 5 roses that were won with the lowest bids were:

The 5 with the highest bids were:

Hey John! I noticed you guys had a lot of the Ludwigs roses. What the heck happened to Ludwigs? They just suddenly left AZ with no real explanation. I wanted to order more roses from them.
