Looking for Plants that Attract Bees for my Bee Garden
Comments (8)Gardengal, When my huge Crysanthemum 'Gold and Silver' bloomed late last September, it was covered in bees for a month. I hadn't seen a honey bee ALL SUMMER, yet this plant had hundreds of bees crawling all over the blooms. You could smell the blooms and hear the bees from five feet away. It's spread like crazy this year, with runners in all directions. I'm going to check to see if the runners are rooted. Send me a message if you're interested and can't find them locally....See MoreHow do I get rid of swarming bees in my yard?
Comments (6)Generally, swarming bees do not attack, because they have nothing to defend (no honey, no children). However, I wouldn't try to remove them without a beesuit. I am really surprised that none of the local beekeepers want to help you. Geez, that's a real drag--certatinly wouldn't happen in our neighborhood. The bees won't stay in a clump on a branch for very long--they will try to find a real home within a day or two, so you can just wait until they leave. Unfortunately, they may decide to move from the tree to somewhere in your house, which would make the problem go from bad to worse. So, what's to do? Well, by any chance do you have a bee supply place locally? If so, you could purchase a standard beehive box, and put them in there. Or, you could put them in a box of some sort, and take them out of town. To move them at all, however, you'll need to either buy a beesuit, or figure out some way to cover yourself completely. Some form of netting over the head is essential--if bees are going to attack (not likely in this case, but there's no sense taking a chance), plus long overalls, leather gloves, workboots and trousers with the cuffs taped shut. That ought to keep you save. Hope this helps....See MoreHow to attract bees?
Comments (27)I too am paying much closer attention to the honey bees since hearing about the loss of so many hives. Last year I had the small blossom sunflowers in amongst my vegetables like squash and beans and the honey bees were going crazy for the pollen all summer. Of course they visited the other vegetable blossoms while they were at it. So far itÂs mostly native bees of all sizes. There is a large family of hunting wasps looking for insects including geranium bud worms. When my lemon tree was in bloom earlier this spring there were just a few honey bees visiting. It will be interesting to see what happens this year when the sunflowers bloom. I gage the health of my garden by how many critters want to live there. IÂve got snakes, lizards, toads, peepers, a few praying mantises during summer and a large variety of insects including those pesky leaf miners on my chard that I canÂt seem to get the upper hand on, in an organic way....See MoreAttracting birds to my yard on long island ny
