Comments (22)I've been trying to get my friend's income tax return returned to her for signing, then to drop off at the tax office, to save postage, but rearrangements regarding her daughter's arrival from the west coast interfered ... and I'd done it wrongly, so had to do it over today. I have two to do for another friend ... and my own to do, as well ... so I'll be busy. I think that my last year's return isn't in the place that it's supposed to be ... so expect to need to go digging for it. I arranged affairs to pay about 9% last year, but suspect that it'll be some higher, this year. Wish me good skill in my calculations, folks, please! Better than for my friend: I'd neglected to add senior's low-income supplement, which caused slight reduction in some credits, but isn't taxed itself. ole joyful...See MoreWeek 66: what would you do without GW?
Comments (19)What would I have done. Wow. Ironically, many of the ideas I had are things I later read about in mags and here on GW, er, Houzz. GW validated my ideas of layout (somethings from Ex- I can't change) and just plain stuff. I learned about cool details, such as Lee Valley drawer dividers. Those mat things under the sink. Corner treatments, etc. My kitchen still being in progress, I still have options to adopt things I didn't know, or wasn't aware of. But so far I'm settling in. My gardens, OTOH. I'd be in a barren wasteland of plants I killed over 12 years. Between the JM (maple) and Mid-Atlantic boards, I live in a very beautiful, high-maintenance sometimes gardenland. In my construction site! LOL! I love the spring trades where we get together and share food/chocolate, plants and stories of the past year. The 1st trade was in 2004, and still going strong. I, too, might get more housework done, but housework to me means building something. If we're referring to cleaning, Pshaw! Who needs that!?! (Ok, I do, but I'm playing tough.) Pinterest killed all my free time, but oh, more ideas! I haven't told you I started finally, laying a kitchen floor this week? I debated between wide, wide oak planks I had (former shelving) or some incredible pine boards. Again, long and wide planks, all reclaimed. I hate cutting into long lumber, which is why my potting bench is 7' long by 6'8" tall, BTW. So, since I couldn't decide what to do with this inch-thick oak, I sold it on CL last week. I started laying out the pine and have a whole {drum roll] TWO BOARDS DOWN! Woot Woot! More on Tuesday. Oh, I'm sick of OSB kitchen floors, the holes where the mice come in and not being able to sweep very well. How does this tie into the thread? Accomplishments. Making decisions. Comments (48)Pattisue, did you read the .. study(?) that compared canned veggies with frozen and fresh? The canned came out no worse than frozen. Now, I can't remember if they were looking at no sodium ones, but I remember being pleased as I ate a can of corn with a spoon from the can. BFelton, shame on 'ya. Everyone has to have a guilty pleasure and some of ours is Velveeta. At least no one is eating space food sticks now. Rest assured, had someone hoarded them they'd still be fine. Total chemicals. No wonder American bodies didn't decompose in the Vietnamese heat like locals did. (Now that's a picture for the morning.) I wanted you all to know I'm on my 4th meal (breakfast, dinner, repeat) without any Reese's cups. That's 1600 delicious, empty calories of waist fat. No sugar withdrawal, which is surprising. And I'm noticing already the HABIT it is to grab one of these packs of heaven-in-orange-plastic. "Awareness is everything," said every yoga teacher I've ever had in 35 years. I also went to the grocery store after work. 10:30 at night. I bought stuff to make some freezable dishes. Soup, grain dishes, maybe some spaghetti. $149 later I had: Kamut, barley, amaranth, quinoa, cous cous (N. African kind, not Israeli), brown rice, millet, and a couple other kinds. Whole wheat pasta (not sure about this). Soy milk (can you cook with this like regular milk? Will it freeze?) Raisins, apples, pineapple, Savoy, Chinese, green cabbage and bok choi. Onions, carrots, zucchini, yellow squash, and lots of colored bell peppers. The latter I can cut up and freeze, too. Some 93% fat free ground chuck for a monstrous vat of soup I plan. Some hot Italian sausage. and Lentils. I've never eaten a bean in my life I didn't spit across the room. But. (Big But) I tried the Carraba's spicy sausage and lentil soup by accident and absolutely loved it. I've looked up some copy cat recipes and think I'm going to try it. If it bombs, I'll pour it in the garden. So wish me luck in cooking, better choices, and that they "stick."...See MoreWeek 116 - How big of a fridge do you need?
Comments (60)Our current house has a very small footprint for a fridge so I have a 21cuft French door because a whole-width door would block the entire hallway. The builders of the house, which was built in 1982 and 20 miles from a grocery store, shoulda known better than to have a tiny space that couldn't be modified grrr. So in the laundry I have a very old upright freezer (Gibson) for mostly meats, a small beverage fridge in the dining room, and a dorm/beer fridge in the garage (used to be in my tack room for horse meds). If there was a way to freeze lettuce, I would've done it to avoid having to go to town so often (and sorry, I have a black thumb so when I tried growing lettuce inside, several types of lettuce died in vain). My "new" house, built in 1970 so even older, has a HUGE space for a fridge and is only a mile away from the nearest grocery store, go figure. But it has half the total sqft for the house so I now have only one do-it-all fridge. A 36" 28cuft French door for only 2 people was my knee-jerk "I NEED a big fridge" reaction to the formerly miserly fridge space. It has a separate drawer for beverages, a door-in-door so DH can quickly get at his stuff that otherwise he pokes around forever to get out, and outside water and ice dispenser since it's Phoenix. The fridge shelves fold so I can stand up an open bottle of wine; I tried some caps that are supposed to allow laying down but I don't think they're meant to work with wine sloshing back and forth as the drawer is opened DAMHIK! Well, I don't know how many will read this far but thanks for letting me vent to other TKO's who understand these things lol!...See Moreguco45
